I can't believe that it's been 30 years since the greatest miniseries of all-time, ROOTS, played on TV. I was such a young lad at the time watching this show and remember how intense it was for my parents and everyone I knew who watched it. Back in the late 70s there was only 3 major TV networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, so ratings were very high then for them. These days when you have over 500 channels and non-scripted programs such as reality shows, the competition is fierce. Anyway, ROOTS was such an important and historical event that you can still watch it over the course of a week and it would still be better than 90% of the shows playing on TV now. On May 22, you can watch the miniseries at home as Warner Bros. Home Video will be releasing a 4-disc box set DVD. Some of the extra features incudes "Remembering Roots" featurette, Video highlights with cast relaying stories about filming particular scenes, Audio commentary from key cast members, New bonus disc: "Crossing Over: How Roots Captivated a Nation" (2007), Documentary "Roots: One Year Later" (1978).

A saga of African-American life, based on Alex Haley's family history. Kunta Kinte is abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to America. He makes several escape attempts until he is finally caught and maimed. He marries Bell, his plantation's cook, and they have a daughter, Kizzy, who is eventually sold away from them. Kizzy has a son by her new master, and the boy grows up to become Chicken George, a legendary cock fighter who leads his family into freedom. Throughout the series, the family observes notable events in U.S. history, such as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slave uprisings, and emancipation.
LeVar Burton, Ben Vereen, Leslie Uggams, George Stanford Brown, Maya Angelou, Lou Gossett Jr., Moses Gunn, Edward Asner, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Lloyd Bridges, O.J Simpson, Sandy Duncan, Todd Bridges, and Cicely Tyson are just a few of the notables names that starred in the monumental experience.
So if you haven't seen "ROOTS" or it's been some time since you did, please pick up this DVD box set. It not only is worth it, but a collector's item!

I, too, remember watching the original airing of Roots. It was so captivating. The streets were cleared from 8-11PM and for those who did not have working tv's, there were houses that had conglomerate Roots viewings. We learned so much and were able to ask so many questions that many of us young people (I was 9 years old) did not know to ask before. We had to learn to handle our stirred up feelings while going to school and jobs the days following the airings. It was an experience we tried to re-create for our two children about seven years ago. While sitting through hurricane weather, we watched the ENTIRE series. I am so happy and thankful for the experience and we plan to definitely purchase the 30-year DVD anniversary set. Thank you for this opportunity to share my memories.
