Star Wars turns 30 - James Earl Jones Remembers Darth Vader

With 2007 being the 30th anniversary of "Star Wars", I couldn't but help myself to ask the legendary James Earl Jones about his thoughts on the film while I spoke to him on the set of his new film, "The Better Man". After all, his voice is what helped shaped Darth Vader into a legendary screen character. Although Jones never appeared in the film, it's his voice that folks have come to know and respect. Who could ever forget that line, "Impressive. Most impressive. Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me."Jones was modest in talking about what he did for the film. According to the website, Wikipedia, "At his own request, he is uncredited in some versions of the films. Jones cites the case of Linda Blair's Oscar nomination for The Exorcist, when there was a campaign for Mercedes McCambridge (who provided the devil's voice) to share the nomination. Jones found this ridiculous, and did not want to find himself put in a similar position with Star Wars."

James Earl Jones: I don't talk about Darth Vader so much because David Prowess is Darth Vader. I'm happy that it took off the way it did and I'm happy to be a part of it, but I'm just a part of it to that extent, like the guy who did the breathing. The guy who did the breathing wasn't me. Darth Vader is a composite of four energies; David Prowess in the costume, the guy who breathes, the guy who talks, which is me, and the guy who does the sword fights. Did you ever notice by the way that when he breathes and talks, it's not synchronized? He breathes and talks differently. He never breathes then talks.

Also known for his stage work such his recent stint doing "On Golden Pond", Jones has gone on to do many more films and voiceovers such as Mufasa in "The Lion King" and probably has the most recognized voice in the world. Jones is in Shreveport, Louisiana shooting "The Better Man" where he plays the father of Martin Lawrence and MoNique.
