The Akils, Girlfriends creator and husband get upgrade to do films

It may have taken a long but FINALLY the creator of "Girlfriends" is getting a raise in the Hollywood industry. After creating "Girlfriends" as well as "The Game", never mind the fact that she had been writing for a number of shows prior to these last two, Mara Brock Akil, and her husband, Salim Akil, who's directed several Girlfriends's episodes, will be doing some writing, producing, and directing for Our Stories Films, which is run by Bob Johnson and Tracey Edmonds. Their first project will be a film about a woman who starts a business to investigate the mates of high-powered women after she herself is left at the altar.

While there are a lack of Black actresses in the business, the number of Black writers, especially females, who get work is almost non-existent. Unless they are directing their own screenplay like Spike Lee, John Singleton, and a few others have done, there aren't that many screenwriters that just gets to write and received recognition. Let's see, Suzanne de Passe was nominated for her work on 1972's Lady Sings The Blues, Tina Andrews wrote Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Kriss Turner was the writer of Something New. There are more than just these three, but these are the few that come to mind as of now.

It's about time that someone recognized the talent of the Akils. If the two of them can carve out successful TV projects thus far, they should be able to replicate the same standard on the big screen.
