While there are a lack of Black actresses in the business, the number of Black writers, especially females, who get work is almost non-existent. Unless they are directing their own screenplay like Spike Lee, John Singleton, and a few others have done, there aren't that many screenwriters that just gets to write and received recognition. Let's see, Suzanne de Passe was nominated for her work on 1972's Lady Sings The Blues, Tina Andrews wrote Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Kriss Turner was the writer of Something New. There are more than just these three, but these are the few that come to mind as of now.
It's about time that someone recognized the talent of the Akils. If the two of them can carve out successful TV projects thus far, they should be able to replicate the same standard on the big screen.

Thank You Thank you
I was just at the VH1 website arguing with BLACK WOMAN about how shows like Charm School, and Miss New York don't help our image.
This lady is doing her thing, please keep it up we don't have to act like "monkeys" to entertain.
P.S. Note how SOFT and BEAUTIFUL she looks, Now go look at the Charm School girls, and Miss New York.---Pathetic

I love to hear about Black Americans doing their thing. We all need to aim high and go for what our passions are. My husband and I just attended our first film festival in Hollywood. My husband is a writer and producer. He directed his first short film "The Restaurant. I am really getting interested in this film industry and just hope and pray, we are as fortunate as the Akils'. Hats off. This makes me so proud.

I love Mara. I also would love to work for her because ever since I was a kid I have been dabbling in scriptwriting. Now she can bring some of her magic to the big screen. I must admit though The Game after a rocky start has become a fave of mine.

do it!!
I hope they will be supported by the black community.
oh yea, they r a lot of black actresses out here. There r not enough jobs. The few project or roles always go to the actresses w/ the longest or the most popular resume. This is un fair but its called marquee value. I hope this couple will give the unknown actress a chance in their projects.

Do your thing girl. It is good to finally have a show that allows black women to express their strengths and still be working professionals. Girlfriends is a huge step in us breaking the stereotypes.
