Although his films have been more successful financially than the average Black film, Tyler Perry has never received the best of reviews from critics. Some could argue that the writing is poor and contrived, but others love it. His 'Madea' films are adaptations from the plays and folks come to support, and yet he can't get over the hump of getting someone of record to say something really positive. With his fourth feature film, 'Why Did I Get Married?,' Tyler Perry has a winner in the making. Not only is the writing sharp and candid, but the acting from the ensemble cast, including Perry himself, is aces across the board. Not since Malcolm Lee's 'Best Man' has there been a Black film that dealt with college educated black individuals dealing with the middle-class growing pains of life. You will laugh, you may cry, but you will enjoy this film. With a cast that includes himself, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Denise Boutte, Lamann Rucker, Richard T. Jones, and Keesha Sharp, this is his best film to date.

Written by Perry, the story is about eight successful individuals (four couples) who decide to get together at a retreat in the Colorado mountains. Terry, a doctor (Perry), and Diane (Leal), a partner at a law firm, are the first to arrive, having driven in arguing in the car about Diane being more committed to her work than to her husband. They are then joined by Patricia (Jackson), a successful psychologist and author and her husband Gavin (Yoba), an architect. Patricia is the brains behind getting everyone together since they rarely have time to speak or see each other. Coming in by train are the combative couple, Angela (Smith), a hair salon business owner, and Marcus (White), her husband who works for her and has kids by another woman. The minute they get on the train to when they get to the retreat is nothing but arguments left and right. It looks like they've been at this for years. Last, we have Sheila (Scott) and Mike (Jones), who decided to bring Trina, Sheila's friend (Boutte), since there was a spare bed in the house. A single woman in the house makes all the women nervous, especially Angela, who brought her Vaseline and sneakers just in case. As the men huddle together and spill beans about some of their marriage woes, the women do the same until all secrets are laid out in the open, and the strength of all their marriages is put to the test.
To reveal more would be spoiling it for you. Perry has put together a very sharp story filled with emotion, despair, romance, and plenty of laughs. As stated before, the acting by the ensemble is amazing. Jackson, who hasn't had a real role since she did John Singleton's 'Poetic Justice' is back in good form. Jill Scott is a revelation! For her film debut, she clearly demonstrates that she has the chops to do better than some of the actresses who have been at this for years. From 'Guiding Light' to 'Boston Public' to 'Dreamgirls,' Leal is a leading lady to watch out for. Her time has come. The scene stealer and the anchor of the film is Tasha Smith as the no-nonsense, ain't-having-it, sassy wife Angela. Without her quick wit and emotional outbursts, this film would be bland. She's the glue that keeps the film from being boring. As for the men, it's nice to see Perry be an actor for once, without the Madea persona. He and every one of the guys play ordinary men with problems that many may relate to. Every one of Perry's film has the man you love to hate, and here it's Richard T. Jones, and he plays it very well. I wouldn't want to be him walking in the streets next to a woman who just saw the film. Her mind may still be on the movie--then she will inflict some bodily harm on him. Known more for his physique than for his acting, Michael Jai White makes sure women get their money's worth, as well as allowing them see that he can act in a dramatic role when given the chance. Also expected within a Perry film are the spiritual messages, but it's not over-used here as in his other films.

Based on the theatrical play but without the singing, 'Why Did I Get Married?' is a very enlightening, romantic, emotional, uplifting, and universal film that should please all.

A hit dog always hollers the loudest, grandmama nem use to say. I see the dogs(critics) are howling like crazy, disturbing the peace. Dey be lickin’ dey wounds, and you keep hittin’ dem Tyler so dey wound ain’t had a chance to heal. You be bad boy oh! Can somebody please call 911? The racket they are making is tap dancing on my last nerve. Does anyone have a Goody powder for my awful headache and theirs? Give me a pigfoot and a bottle a beer. Yeah Lawdy!
I will continue to support Tyler at the box off as long as he continues to bring us positive and realistic images of African Americans. Being sick of the garbage that is out there is an understatement, I hunger for a variety of depictions of black life. When I watch a movie I want to see myself, neighbors, friends, and family. We, African Americans, are such fantastic, gifted, innovative, and creative souls. There are so many voices, yet to be heard. I appreciate that Tyler has been able to break through and tell some of our stories.
It was such a pleasure to see beautiful and well-dressed normal black folks on the screen that I could actually relate to.
People like me don’t even listen to the “so-called” critics. They don’t know diggly squat, and the people proved them wrong and left egg on their face. This is why they and their ilk are so hopping mad.
I have seen this movie six times. No I am not a fanatic. I have not graced any of Tyler’s stage productions. The haters infuriated me, therefore, propelling me into action. I even convinced some non-Tyler fans to go. Because I was so mad. They loved the movie. Some of these folks I dragged along are some serious bootleg customers. But I convinced them of the importance of buying a ticket to support the bottom line. When you buy bootleg, you aren’t supporting the artist. You are supporting the bootlegger. We must feed the loa(Tyler). They hemmed and hawed, but some agreed to accompany me. Let’s make the haters even madder y’all. Let’s collectively help Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married keep raking in the dough.
Pros:
There is eye candy for the men.
There is eye candy for the women.
There is humor.
There is pain.
There is laughter.
There is joy.
There is disappointment.
The movie just depicts life and all that accompanies the journey.
Donny Hathaway’s song “Giving Up” as part of the sound track is a treat.
There were no lurid sex scenes, profanity, and nearly naked women.
The actors were well dressed. No baggy pants, etc.
The characters were all realistic. I know all of these people.
Tyler character, Terry, mentioned Africa without disdain.
Fresh Black Faces. We often see the same folks over and over. It can be a bore.
Cons:
I love everything about the movie, accept when Janet walks into the house, sets her bag down, and goes straight to the refrigerator and begins to prepare dinner, without washing her hands. I am like “aww naww!” Tyler baby what were you thinking.
Movie Etiquette:
Folks keep your crying babies at home. If you can’t afford a baby sitter, a responsible and mature parent(s) should stay at home with their child. It is so incredibly thoughtless and inconsiderate. You simply diminish other movie goers enjoyment by having them endure a crying baby. I believe children under 13 should not be in a movie like this. Any person who can’t sit still and be relatively quiet so the other folks can enjoy the movie should not be allowed in the theatre. It just pisses me off to no end. I now go to the manager and demand y’all be removed.
I know that black culture is interactive. I know we witness and testify in church and the theatre. Can I get a witness? It is simply who we are. We talk back. However, constant talking during the movie is extreme and prevents others from hearing the dialogue.
Honorable Mention:
One of favorite lines is when Angie’s husband said something to the effect “you weren’t talkin’ all that when I was in the NFL.” Angie replies “yeah, 2 years of the NFL, 8 years of broke – touch down!” I hollered.
Secondly, the dinner scene is a classic. I enjoyed it immensely.
Wish List:
It would be so nice to see Lamman(Sheriff Troy) in another of your movies down the line. He sure is “purty.” Also, I would like to see Sean Blakemore. He “purty” too , but manly looking. I think the ladies will like him. It is good to have eye candy for women. They look like real men.
Conclusion:
I give this movie 5 stars. I absolutely recommend it. Tyler great job and I am expecting more great things from you.
The End.
