While last week's box office take of less than $20 million dollars for '30 Days of Night' was enough to beat Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get Married?' for the number one spot at the box office, media pundits are wondering how Tyler Perry managed to grab the number one spot in the first place, earning more than $20 million dollars during the opening weekend of his film. In addition, 'Why Did I Get Married?' has had less than a 50% drop off in revenue during its second week out, no small task in a business of fickle audiences. How has an African-American actor, writer, and producer who is not really a household name managed to pull such numbers?
Some have referred to Tyler Perry as 'Hollywood's best kept secret,' which strikes me as a funny tag for a person who's had a fan base for years through his plays. He was able to exploit that fan base for not only his first film, 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman,' but also for his second, 'Madea's Family Reunion.' Both of those films captured over $20 million at the box office, at a time when other films were expected to do better than them. Perry's films have grossed $145 million total so far.
Lionsgate Films, which backs Perry, knows a cash cow when it sees it, and they continue to produce Perry's films to much success with little marketing. When his most recent previous film, 'Daddy's Little Girls' failed to achieved the same numbers his other films have, the media was there to attack Perry and say that he's lost his touch. With 'Why Did I Get Married?' grabbing attention, this time from a wide audience, the press is in love with him again. But they just can't figure out how he does it.

What's the secret to his success? There really isn't one. One of the reasons Perry has been able to capture the attention of many, first in his plays and now in his movies, is that he creates what hasn't been pitched to the masses in slick, big-budget Hollywood films. Perry's movies instill family values, sometimes using words with religious sentiments. Perry is also a business man who knows how to capture markets that have gone under-served. Women tend to go to movies in droves if you give them what appeals to them. They want to see stories that they can relate to and men they can love. It also helps when you have actors who are also musicians like Janet Jackson and Jill Scott, that women identify with or even revere as icons. At a time when Hollywood seems to make mostly films for kids and young males, a Tyler Perry film is a rare movie that appeals to mature, modern women.
Starting as an actor and playwright, Perry is now a media force to reckon with. Not only is his TV show 'House of Payne' a hit on cable, but everything he produces seems to be working now for the big screen as well. A broader audience is starting to realize that.
'Why Did I Get Married?' is a universal film that appeals to all seeking the sensitive expression of human values regardless of what color the actors are on the screen.

I'm a very big fan of Tyler Perry and JD Lawrence they both are truly two blessed and talented brothers. The one thing that admire the most is that there both saved and love God. Second there comedy appeals to all people white and black. may God continue to bless them as they touch more people with there gift of laughter. Here's a press release I did on one of them at the Music Hall in Detroit just a few months ago.
DETROIT, Feb. 9 – Urban theater mania returned this weekend to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. Despite the inclement weather African American theatergoers attended the four-day performance of the hit stage play Rumors. Also in attendance for the first time, Caucasian patrons came out in groups to witness JD Lawrence the man frequent patrons of the genre, staff and media are calling Urban Theater's New King of Dramedy. Rumors has to be one of the few productions that consistently started and ended on time said one staff member at the Music Hall. The two hour and ten minute performance was cleverly written, unpredictable, entertaining, hysterical and ethnicity free. A winning combination that has not been witness on this circuit before. The show-starred Family Matters Darius McCrary and Telma Hopkins from Half and Half. Also added to the mix is platinum recording artist Leytoya Luckett who sings like an angel the songs, Torn and How Do You Love Someone. Written and directed by actor/comedian and singer JD Lawrence. The New York Telly Award winner and lead character or should I say character’s, played an eye popping five characters (Mr. Clarence the show’s narrator, Ms. Mary the usher from hell, Sunshine the outrageous chef, Ashad the Indian landlord and Rev. Dollar). George Smitt and his wife Denna from Detroit said they didn’t even realize until after the performance that Lawrence was the same person playing all five parts on stage in full costumes throughout the night. "They were all different from scene to scene the way they talked, walked and sang. It was like watching Eddie Murphy in the Klumps live" said Evelyn Rivers. The show-stopper of the evening was a hilarious duet between JD Lawrence as Sunshine and Leytoya Luckett as Michelle singing Bad, Bad, Bad that left the audience falling out of there seats. Several staff members and patrons at the music hall said so many plays come and they’re all predictable, there all the same mostly trying to be like Tyler Perry of course, but falling short. Mr. Lawrence genuinely has his own style of comedy and definitely a place in the hearts of Detroit and Toledo theatergoer’s black and white. Dale Murray from 94.1 who had a walk on cameo said "JD Lawrence's Rumors is the must see stage play of the year! Filled with thought provoking dialogue and witty one-liners the show has more twists and turns than the German autobahn. While oftentimes compared to Tyler Perry, JD Lawrence is a writer/director/actor and singer with his own voice". The show also stars comedian George Wilborn and Gary Owens in a hilarious bird fight scene not to be missed. Log onto www.jdlawrencepresents.com for tour dates, pics and cities near you.

Without a doubt, TP is coming into his own, on his own terms! Pity the fool that's jealous of his success, as it's hard won! I can just imagine what's next for him! I wish him the very best! And he should continue to surround himself with those who have the same kinds of "visions" as he! His plays and movies are "tight" and "right"!

What's the secret to his success
Dude, it's his lips. He be trading off of that irresistible African American trait. And, Why not? He's putting out the Christian line (marriage = sacred). Keep your marriage goin', even if she don't like sex and you get it maybe once a year......Even if she put you down in every social circumstance every 20 minutes.....OK, if he all-out doggin' you, physically abusing you, you have Tyler's permission to call it quits. And you will find some African American Forestry Ranger desolated up in White-Country, who starved for the love of a sistah of any size.
If only it were so easy.

Movie critics make me sick, I love it when they say a movie will be a flop and it makes big bucks. In regards to Tyler Perry is making movies that have values of what this nation was founded on, and that is family. This nation was founded under the creed, One nation under GOD. Some law makers that are so PC seem to have forgot this but not this man. His movies are REAL, how many times have you heard people say, "why did I get married?" His movies are real and his plays are funny yet they still have a message. Give him time and you will see him get an Oscar and Emmy. And to all of the movie critics, take a long walk off of a short peer.
