According to Blackfilm.com, Keke Palmer, who received critical acclaim for her role in 'Akeelah and the Bee', has been cast to play rapper Roxanne Shanté in the independent film, 'The Vapors'.
Set against the backdrop of New York City's infamous Queensbridge Housing Projects, 'The Vapors' tells the story of Marley Marl, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane and Shanté, who were a part of the pioneering rap group "The Juice Crew".
Clifton Powell ('Ray') has also been cast to play hip hop DJ and radio host Mr. Magic.
The Juice Crew, founded by Mr. Magic's on-air assistant, DJ Marley Marl, was named after one of Magic's aliases, "Sir Juice."
Crew members also included Craig G, Tragedy Khadafi, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Masta Ace, TJ Swan, and Cool V.
After retiring from the rap game, Shante -- known as 'The First Lady of Rap' but born Lolita Gooden -- reportedly received a PhD from Cornell University and has a practice in Queens.
'The Vapors' will begin filming in January 2008.
Furqaan Clover, who is helming the forthcoming movie 'Queen of Media: The Wendy Williams Story,' is set to direct the project. Marley Marl and Big Daddy Kane are executive producers on the film while the producing company is Furqaan Films.
Palmer, a noted singer, recently released her debut album on Atlantic Records.

This is a message to all rap stars, who cares about you people's lives? If you think everyone cares about your backgrounds you are mistaken. You people think you're bigger then life and your not. Most of you rapper act like you really come form the hood when in actuality you have had a pretty stress free life, by all accounts. It doesn't matter the lyrics you all sing is about gloom and doom, somebody stole my man, stupid ass songs. And by the time you dummies count your money the white man took it all. Do the real folks from the hood a favor get the hell out of our pockets
All of us who really lived in a hood, actively took a part in the hood, and raised ourselves up through eduction and hard work, need to speak out, and take back our kids IMAGINATIONS All of you sellouts, give the hood a bad name. Stop begging and find yourselves a real job. Thank God for bootleg dvd's and cd's

I like the idea of a young, Black actress taking on a challenging part....however, I don't think KeKe Palmer fits the character of Roxanne Shante`. I don't think she's rough enough, or hardcore enough, to be believable enough to pull it off! I will play this one by ear....!

This is SUCH a bad career move for her. HORRIBLE! How do you go from the role of an intelligent young girl in Akeelah and the Bee to a spirited teen in Jump In! to a hoodrat? It makes no sense. No she doesn't fit into that role at all. AS far as this role being "challenging".. I would hardly call an unintelligent, slurry, flat-talking hood rat a challenge. I hope her agent comes in quick fashion and snatches her out of this disaster. She has too much potential for this garbage.

That is so true. She is shooting the beginning of a perfectly promising career in the foot. It makes you ask the infamous question "What was she thinking?' Maybe we will hear some good news like the project has been scrapped or she has bowed out of it. Truthfully, roxanne didn't make ANY real contribution to hip-hop or entertainment so her life really isn't worth telling a story about. The whole thing is a waste of time. I hope she gets out . I would hate to see such talent go to waste on a bad project with a bad role.

You guys are all haters. "WOW, YOUR LIVES MUST BE REALLY MISERABLE". Did anyone(babyred97, hugathug) read that Roxanne Shante is still successful? It doesn't matter what you look like, but, if you got the Moxie to go out and use the music forum or any forum for that matter to segue into a successful business career, then I say, "YOU GO GIRL". What the fuck are you haters doing except hating and disrespecting everyone who doesn't fit into your small way of thinking, get a grip people, movies are about entertainment, but, OOOOPS, WATCH OUT, YOUR DUMBASSES MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING... YEAH I SAID IT........
