Talk about a casting coup! When Zoe Saldana was cast to play Uhuru, which was originally played by Nichelle Nichols, in the new Star Trek film, I'm sure some folks wondered if there would be more Blacks in the film. Well, low and behold, of all the marketing moves the producers could have done to insure that the African American market was represented, they have cast one of the hottest movers and shakers in the media world to appear in the film, Tyler Perry.
That's right - Tyler Perry. According to the website UGO, they are reporting that Perry, who has never appeared in a film that he didn't write, direct, or produce, will be featured in the film as the head of Starfleet Academy, and in a human form, instead of looking like some alien. Tyler's character is overseeing some kind of Starfleet courtroom/ assembly event where young Kirk is facing expulsion from Starfleet.
That's all you need. Explanations are not needed to tell what Perry brings to the table. His last film, 'Why Did I Get Married?', was #1 at the box office during its opening weekend and has amassed over $50 million dollars so far at the gate. His other films 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman', Madea's Family Reunion', and Daddy's Little Girls' also did well at the box office.
While color shouldn't play a factor in the new Star Trek film, and it has never been the case in the previous films, Perry's addition to the film, although a small role, is still the biggest name thus far with the exception of original member Leonard Nimoy, who will reprise his role as the older Spock. Unless you happen to be an avid film goer, names like Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin are not households. Zachary Quinto, who will play the younger Spock, is currently on the NBC's Heroes but hasn't made his mark in the film world yet; and Saldana, who's been in 'Drumline', and 'Guess Who?' is starting to break out with upcoming roles in this film and James Cameron's 'Avatar'.
Although the new film will surely have its fanbase already on the boat ready to set sail to see this, Perry's inclusion will be a big boost to the box office and hopefully introduce a new generation to the long living and prosperous franchise.

Why did they cast a Brother in this role? What do you know about Captain Kirk and his starring role? Kirk cheats in everything he ever does. It's his "Kobeashie Maru." He cheats death at every turn and he's probably going to cheat justice in some way. Is Tyler Perry going to dishonor Starfleet in some way to permit Kirk to get away? When you need a villian or a flunky do you still hire a Black man? Damn it Jim, I'm just a Justice! Way to go Tyler for joining cast with a long tradition and history of success? The first Black babe in space was Kirk's secret stash and the firt Black justice likes to work in drag? If I were Black in space, I'd claim to be a Klingon!

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Great Debaters". I went on Christmas Day. I believe the movie was late coming out, and it was "limited". I know the theater where my husband and I went to see the movie was small, but jammed packed. There was no more room for those still arriving:

My siblings in Indiana weren't even aware of the movie. Only select cities had the privilege of seeing such a wonderful, heart-warming, touching movie.

Tyler Perry: black, intelligent, humorous, handsome, gifted, spiritual, etc. I could go on. Obviously, he's the whole package.
Many blessings and lots of love, TP.

Why couldn't they have Tuvok the black vulcan from the Star Trek Voyager series in this one? That would have been more interesting. But Tyler Perry's addition to the cast will be great too. I'll be sure to see this one.

I always watched Star Trek as a child. But I can't say I was a huge fan. I simply watched because the older children controlled the programming. I will certainly be watching this on to see Tyler Perry do his thing. They couldn't have picked a better drawing card. He will certainly bring something to the table in this role.
I'm looking forward to seeing this Star Trek for several reasons.
