After an impressive film debut in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?, which landed her an NAACP Image Award nomination, Jill Scott is ready for the big leagues on her own, but unless things change, what was expected to go to the big screen will now appear on the small screen as 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency', which stars Jill Scott in the lead role, will now head to BBC television sometime in April.
If successful, could become a television series. Directed by Anthony Minghella, the film also stars Anika Noni Rose, Idris Elba, John Kani, Desmond Dube, Lucian Msamati, David Oyelowo, Colin Salmon, and Nikki Amuka Bird.
Based on the best-selling novel series by Alexander McCall Smith, "Detective Agency" chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, the proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana. Singer Jill Scott will take the lead role of Precious Ramotswe in the Botswana-based version of Alexander McCall Smith's best-selling novel, which will be directed and written by Anthony Minghella and co-written by Richard Curtis.
As a child, Precious learns from her father a great love for her country and the skills necessary to make a fine detective. After his death, Precious sets up her agency. It is a risky endeavour but with the help of her quirky secretary, Mma Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose), she soon finds her services much in demand. Precious investigates cases, helps people solve problems in their lives, and soon finds a special friendship blossoming with JLB Matekoni (Lucian Msamati), the highly respectable and slightly shy owner of Tklokweng Road Speedy Motors.

In an interview she did with 'Inside Africa', a half-hour current affairs weekly CNN program which provides global viewers with an inside look at political, economic, social and cultural affairs and trends in Africa, Scott and Rose talked brief about their characters.

I am glad that Ms. Scott has been afforded this opportunity. I even more greatful to have such character portrayed authentically. I have to say I am slightly disappointed that is now just for televsion as oppose to beginning as a movie and then as a sitcom especially on BBC. I don't know how many would actually get the opportunity to catch it there. Perhaps it is best. I question whether or not the sitcome would remain as authentic if it were done by an American braodcast company. I believe that it would be trivialized, where it truly is an opportune time to see more into one of Africa's many countries and culture and get so,e more than what has been portrayed in historical books and previous films. The film industry has gotten better with such movie as Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond but I really would be interested in and prefer seeing more movies that portray life in various parts of Africa more realistically just as these have.
