Having achieved major success on the stage and screen as a singer and as an actress, Beyonce, who starred in 'Dreamgirls', will be singing again on the big screen for her next big role. While speaking to Cedric the Entertainer on his latest film, 'Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins', he mentioned to blackfilm.com that Beyonce has been cast to play famed singer Etta James on his next film, 'Cadillac Records'.
The story is about Leonard Chess, the legendary founder of the South Side Chicago blues label Chess Records. The period piece follows the rise and fall of Chess Records, which launched the careers of such R&B greats as Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Chess, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, scoured the South, checking out the various blues scenes and selling records from the back of his Cadillac. Cedric the Entertainer will play Willie Dixon, who wrote most of the hits records and was part of the famous company. One of his most famous songs was "Hoochie Coochie Man".
Oscar winner Adrien Brody has also joined the cast to replace Matt Dillon as Leonard Chess, the founder of Chess Records. Dillon had to drop out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.
As previously reported, Jeffrey Wright will portray Muddy Waters in the film set in 1950s Chicago. Also new to the cast are Emmanuelle Chriqui, Columbus Short and Tammy Blanchard.
Darnell Martin ("Their Eyes Were Watching God") penned the script and is directing. Sony/BMG's Sofia Sondervan and Andrew Lack are producing.
According to allmusicguide.com, James landed at Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, signing with their Argo subsidiary. Immediately, her recording career kicked into high gear; not only did a pair of duets with her then-boyfriend (Moonglows lead singer Harvey Fuqua) chart, her own sides (beginning with the tortured ballad "All I Could Do Was Cry") chased each other up the R&B lists as well. Leonard Chess viewed James as a classy ballad singer with pop crossover potential, backing her with lush violin orchestrations for 1961's luscious "At Last" and "Trust in Me." But James' rougher side wasn't forsaken -- the gospel-charged "Something's Got a Hold on Me" in 1962, a kinetic 1963 live LP (Etta James Rocks the House) cut at Nashville's New Era Club, and a blues-soaked 1966 duet with childhood pal Sugar Pie De Santo, "In the Basement," ensured that.

I agree that Queen Latifah probably would have been a much better (as well as more believeable) choice to play such an iconic figure as the great Etta James. I have been an Etta James fan for quite some time and to me casting Beyonce to play Etta Jame is like casting Paula Abdul to play Aretha Franklin. It's a big mistake. I myself, will wait to see this movie when it hits the stores on DVD.

First off Beyonce CAN sing. As a matter of fact she is one of the few who can jump all over the stage and still carry a tune. Lets stop always trying to diminish the talents of our women. Jennifer did a good job in dreamgirls although I am not a fan of her voice... Instead of browbeating lets try uplifting...Thats why they say that we are like crabs in a barrel, because we are always pulling each other down.........

This is not the Etta James story. It's the story of Leonard Chess. Who portrays Etta James might very well have a small party. Regardless hopefully they will use Etta's actual vocals.

First of all Jennifer and Beyonce are both very talented. I do however believe that Jennifer has a better voice than beyonce, more soul. If I were Bey I wouldn't even want to play a role that involves singing. The only person who got that off was J-Lo in "Selena". Beyonce if you really want people to take you seriously take a role that does not at all whatsoever involve singing (Dreamgirls, Fighting Temptations, the soundtrack of Pink Panther). We know you can sing. The question is can you act!!!

I agree that Rosie Perez does look more like Etta James, than Beyonce, with some training Rosie could lose the accent. If they must keep her I hope that she does a good job.

Y'all ever wondered who Hispanic/Latino performers enjoy success? Because they cheer for each other in victory and defeat. We, on the other hand choose to engage in backbiting.
This post deals with Beyonce, and her landing the role of a legend. Cheer for her, because that is great news. Stop throwing other people up into conversations they do not belong in. Most importantly, stop deminishing the accomplishments of people within our own culture. In other words, stop acting like a bunch of crabs in a pot.
Way to go Beyonce, you deserve the role as much as America deserves to see your interpretation of the Legendary Etta James.

Beyonce is a pretty girl but that child can't act. I don't know about yall but I ain't racing out to see this movie.
I think Tisha Campbell looks more like Etta James and yes Tisha is a triple threat. She sings, dance and can act (wink)

I hope the movie has an excellent director b/c a talented director will help Beyonce's performance & timing and give her everything that she will so desparately need for acting in a dramatic role. Honestly, she was boring in the Dreamgirl's role and the movie would have flopped if it had not been for the other powerful actors in it. Based on her present non-acting skills, Beyonce won't be able to hold her own in any movie. So I hope there are some powerful actors to compensate for her lack of acting talent in this movie, or I won't waste my time or money on this one. I wish her the best and hope that she surprises us and delivers a good performance.

Diana Ross didn't resemble Billie Holiday in the least bit, however, her role in Lady Sings the Blues was the best work of her acting career. Even Denzel when he first started acting wasn't the Denzel he is now, No disrespect to Denzel he is the greatest. If you disagree, just rent a copy of the movie Carbon Copy. Obviously, whoever is doing the movie sees something appealing in Ms. Knowles. Furthermore, it is ridiculous for anyone to say that Ms. Knowles can not sing. If you don't think so, go to YouTube and watch her sing the National Anthem.
