If all goes well, 'Cadillac Records' is shaping up to be the next big musical that will bring folks back to the past as some of the best musicians you probably haven't heard of, aside from a few, are being played on the big screen.
With Jeffrey Wright set to play Muddy Waters, Gabrielle Union has been recently cast to play his girlfriend-then wife Geneva Wade.
The story is about Leonard Chess, the legendary founder of the South Side Chicago blues label Chess Records. The period piece follows the rise and fall of Chess Records, which launched the careers of such R&B greats as Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Chess, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, scoured the South, checking out the various blues scenes and selling records from the back of his Cadillac.
According to the book 'Can't Be Satisfied: The Life and Times of Muddy Waters' by Robert Gordon, Geneva Wade was Muddy Waters' girlfriend in the late 1940s. She would later become Mrs. Muddy Waters, Geneva Morganfield. Muddy's real name was McKinley Morganfield. Her kids through another relationship were raised by her and Muddy. The song 'Little Geneva' was based on her. The book states that Muddy was quoted as saying 'When I met her, even though I was a recording success, there were still people who scorned my music. Geneva encouraged me to ignore them and fight for what I wanted to accomplish. I'll never be able to put words the way I feel about her.'

Directed by Darnell Martin, the film also stars Adrian Brody as Leonard Chess, Cedric the Entertainer as Willie Dixon, Beyonce Knowles as Etta James, Eamonn Walker as Howlin' Wolf, Columbus Short as Little Walter and Mos Def confirmed as Chuck Berry.
Currently filming in New Jersey, Sony BMG will release 'Cadillac Records' in 2009.

So many of you say that Beyonce is not right for the role of Etta b/c she doesn't sound like her, and I would agree with you based on B's typical sound EXCEPT...
The mark of a truly great singer is the ability to control her/his voice and vocal chords in order to enable them to be versatile. Beyonce has an amazing musical range, and if you have ever listened to her full body of work, you would know that she can go completely soprano in one song and then come as deep and throaty as Macy or Tina in the next much the same as Jill Scott can. This in my opinion means we should all give the sistah a chance to prove herself onscreen before scratching her off the list. Her acting in Dream Girls showed an incredible amount of growth from what she was capable of in previous roles and in case you missed the evidence of this, play the scene on your DVD where she discovers what Curtis had done to Effie and where she sings Listen...though there was little to no dialogue, her expressions speak volumes.
Many people initially thought that Jamie Foxx could never pull off Ray Charles onscreen and Angela Bassett was the worst possible choice to play Tina, and now those same people have to remind themselves that Angela is not Tina and Jamie is not Ray when they see them.
Oh and before I go....to the commenter who referenced Diana as Lady Day as an example of a poor casting choice, though on the front end it may have seemed an idiotic casting decision, one would have to be blind and cinematically illiterate not to see how Ms. Ross became the incarnation of Ms. Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues and I suspect Ms. Knowles will deliver in the very same way.
The world is yours Beyonce...I hope you continue to show your appreciation for the gift by continuing to deliver via your amazing work ethic as you always have. You are an example of the what hard work brings to one's life! So go on and do what you do and let the haters do what they do best...HATERS HATE!

I think all of you are haters! BEYONCE HAS A BIG VOICE! If you wacthed her studio performance in dream girls she nailed it. And watch the commercials people because if you do you will hear her singing some of the song and she sounded great! I am not a die hard beyonce fan but I have to give her whats due to her. Yall are mad cuz yall think she stole all the thunder from dream girls but don't get mad because she improved her acting skills tremendously. Let her do her thing because everybody talking will be watching that movie!

It is so funny how people who think others are hating on beyonce base their responses strictly on emotion instedd of fact. Beyonce sings her behind off but she is no actor..and that's ok. No one can be all things. I saw the movie Friday and not only was the theater empty, but I was disappoonted in her acting. Hear me..not her singing but her acting. She is a wonderful stage entertainer but the big screen is not her thing...at lease not yet. She may get better over time but it is not fair to make claims of skills she does nto yet posess and then say people are hating on her.
Also for those of you -like the person who said someone must have thought she was good for the part- who think she was chosen in a normal movie roll process. She was one of the producers of the movie so she did not have to audition or do anything that normal actors do to get parts. Naturally, if you pay for the movie, you can be in it if you want to.

To all of the Beyonce "haters", I went back and listened to the original songs sung by Etta James. To play a part Beyonce gets an A++ in my book. she played Etta James very well and showed some restraint (thank you) in the language.
