'Dark Knight' Stays Atop Box Office For Fourth Straight Week

'The Dark Knight' continued to outlast its competition and stay as #1 film for the weekend as it collected another $26 million dollars from Friday - Saturday. Its total gross at this point is a little over $440 million. Still not close to reach 'Titanic' numbers, but $500 is certainly within reach. Folks are still going back for repeat viewings.

Coming in second place was the drug filled movie 'Pineapple Express' with $22.4 million dollars. It would have probably beaten 'Dark Knight' for first place had it not opened up on Wednesday. It opened up with huge numbers and then started to drop by the time Saturday had arrived. Nevertheless, the James Franco-Seth Rogen film has brought in $40.5 million dollars at the box office.

Finishing in third with $16 millon dollars and grabbing $70 million dollars in total so far was 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor'. While the numbers may not be as good as the previous sequel, the film is doing very well overseas. Also opening last Wednesday but landing in fourth place was sequel film, 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2', with $10.8 million dollars and $19 millon overall. Directed by Sanaa Hamri ('Something New'), the film brings back all four girls from the original (Blake Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn).

Rounding out the top five was 'Step Brothers' with $8.9 million dollars and $80.9 million in total. The musical film 'Mamma Mia' crossed the $100 million dollar plateau with $8.1 million dollars this weekend and a total gross of $104 million dollars thus far.

With another comedy, 'Tropic Thunder' set to open this Wednesday, expect the other comedy films to drop off a bit and expect 'The Dark Knight' to be number #1 yet again, unless the horror film 'Mirrors' with Kiefer Sutherland and Paula Patton bring enough fans of the genre to dethrone the Caped Crusader from the box office.
