Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. ('Jerry Maguire') has been cast to play Dr. Benjamin S. Carson in the new TNT Original movie 'GIFTED HANDS: THE BEN CARSON STORY', according to an announcement today by Michael Wright, senior vice president in charge of the Content Creation Group for TNT, TBS and TCM. The movie, based on Carson's inspirational memoir, is a JOHNSON & JOHNSON SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION® that will trace his journey from frustrated inner-city kid to director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
The project is the latest JOHNSON & JOHNSON SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION® movie to appear on TNT. "Johnson & Johnson is proud to be bringing the story of Ben Carson's extraordinary life to families across America," said Kim Kadlec, chief media officer, Johnson & Johnson Global Marketing Group.
Carson's memoir, which was crafted with Cecil Murphey, describes life as a child on the mean streets of Detroit. Carson faced difficulties early on, when his father abandoned the family. "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my mother," Carson wrote. Carson's mother pushed her son to become the best he could be through education. Carson recalled her saying over and over to him, "Bennie, if you can read, honey, you can learn just about anything you want to know. The doors of the world are open to people who can read."
With a new pair of glasses and encouragement to spend time at his local library, Carson dove into the world of books. His scholastic performance improved dramatically. He went on to college and medical school, refusing to give up on the dream he and his mother had for his future, even when prejudice and negative peer pressure threatened to stand in his way. Carson is now a best-selling author and director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, where he pours everything he has into helping young people overcome their medical limitations and fulfill their own dreams.
Carson was recently named a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President George W. Bush bestowed the honor on him at a ceremony in June. In the White House announcement, Carson was honored for working throughout his career "to improve the lives of those suffering from neurological disorders. His groundbreaking contributions to medicine and his inspiring efforts to help America's youth fulfill their potential have strengthened our nation."

I have just finish watching the story about Dr. Johnson.I cried I felt his pain I felt his defeat sometime but most of all I felt the wonderful and beautiful discovery of an entire new world. It has Inspired me to continue to do the work that has been given to me.I work with men comming out of the prison system because I believe that once we get our men into their positions, that we will see a change in our society.I came out from this movie with a new prayer.God may we take the gift that has been given us and use it as a scaple and cut away the parts of the mind that has been infected so that the minds of those may be healthy once again.Thank you for being who you are.I am a great grandmother on the move to call her sons home.

Those of you who seemingly can only find negative things about this story sound like A bunch of White folks trying to play yourselves off as self hating Negroes who can't simply grasp the gist of the moral of this story: YOU CAN IF YOU TRY!
If you really are Black then give credit instead finding the negative about positive things we've accomplished: I really think many of you aren't BLACK at all! Sounds more like an effort to create dissention among the ranks than expressing sincere sentiments: are you really BLACK?

I once taught at Wilson Middle School on Lane and Central, and my wife taught at Detroit Southwestern. So we feel very privileged to have taught the angels in the inner city.
I now am a motivational speaker for at risk students across our nation. Readers will realize that Dr. Ben Carson attended these schools in Southwest Detroit.
I would love to thank all that made this known to the public. I haven't seen it yet, but the students here in Kauai now know about a great former Motown resident.
I do ask any reader a favor. Please contact Dr. Carson and tell him that I directed a group of students to pay tribute to his inspirational story by painting a mural in his old middle school. In 1987, few persons knew about his story. His story is what inspired me to become a mentor. I think you will like what you see on my website.
While we lived in Detroit, we yearned for feel good stories about Detroiters. I now live in Kauai with the wonderful memories having served the hard working residents of Detroit.
Educators realize that I documented my teaching career and have photos in my presentations of his actual classroom.
I hope the movie made the point that there are many Ben Carsons in today's classrooms that need inspiration to rise like Dr. Carson did.
I hope that it encouraged mentorship. My wife taught with Dr. McCotter, Ben's science teacher. Mentorship, mentorship, mentorship
Kudos, but what took so long?
