These are not my words. This story was put out a couple of days ago, but I'm just getting to it now. The article was brought to my attention from an Australian website, livenews.au
Acclaimed Australian director Rowan Woods had to fight to keep Oscar winner Forest Whitaker in his new film 'Winged Creatures' after a film company executive dismissed the actor as "ugly, black and unbankable."
Despite having "the hottest ensemble cast in town," including Guy Pearce, Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Jennifer Hudson, Woods said the company who owned the script wouldn't accept Whitaker as a leading man. 'The initial finance fell through when I stuck with Forest Whitaker for the role of Charlie,' Woods said.
"An executive told me straight: `Even if he wins the Oscar he's ugly, he's black and he's unbankable.'"

Speaking at the Australian Directors Guild conference in Sydney this weekend, Woods said the company, which he wouldn't name for legal reasons, eventually let go of the script because of their disagreement over Whitaker.
The budget on 'Winged Creature's dropped from $US11 million to $US4.5 million because Woods wouldn't consider a Michael Douglas or an Al Pacino for Whitaker's role. "The unbankable part of it was nearly right," he said.
"They wanted everyone but Forest Whitaker ... and this is one of the best actors on the planet." By the time we had stacked the cast around Forest the asking price for the movie had more than halved from its initial level."
'Winged Creatures' centers around a random shooting in a Los Angeles diner, and how it affects the lives of those who witness it.
I don't know about anyone else, but to say that Whitaker isn't bankable truly hasn't seen his body of work and what he brings to the table. There are plenty of actors, especially Oscar winners who still can't open a film let alone bring in an audience. 'Winged Creatures' was the first film that Whitaker and Hudson did after winning Oscars in 2007, and it still doesn't have a release date.

Okay, people keep mixing it up. American studio exec makes the comment, Aussie director exposes the racism, but people get confused and say "Aussies are racists". From the leading Aussie newspaper today (Sydney Morning Herald): "The 2008 Lowy Institute Poll revealed Australians favour Barack Obama over John McCain by nearly five to one."
Okay - now if Americans just felt the same way, it will be Fun Time at Election Time next month.

I cannot believe the gall of whoever thinks Forest Whitaker is unbankable, and ugly? I don't think so. I make a point of seeing all of his movies. My husband, kids and I love all of this work. I used him as a role model for my kids as they were growing up. They are grown now, and continue to follow and love his work.

Since when does an actor have to be "good looking"? He is not running for Mr America. I think this person doesn't want Whitaker just because he is black, and not because he is unattractive. There are plenty of "ugly" white actors, and I've never heard them being turned down for a role, because they are "ugly". Whitaker's dedication to bring truth to a character is what should matter. But then Halle Berry, who has won an oscar still gets the same crap, but it's not because she's ugly, but because she is black.

Well, what can I say about Mr. Whitaker that hasn't already been said. A brilliant actor? yes. A person who makes impeccable movies? yes. He is a phenomenal actor and I will continue to support him.

Forest is ugly. He is not pleasing to the eye,
but he is talented.
However, i agree with the guy who made this
comment. Whenever i am watching a movie with
Forest in it i can't help but think of how ugly
he is.
Only ugly people say:
'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.',
if a vast majority 'find' it ugly, it's ugly.

What he lacks in movie star good looks, he more than makes up for with his brilliant performances, sensitive eyes, and lovely demeanor. I met him at a wedding and was immediately drawn to his kindness and attention to those around him. He is a gentle and sensitive man, and he deserves the best! God has blessed him with success because we truly do reap what we sow.
