These are not my words. This story was put out a couple of days ago, but I'm just getting to it now. The article was brought to my attention from an Australian website, livenews.au
Acclaimed Australian director Rowan Woods had to fight to keep Oscar winner Forest Whitaker in his new film 'Winged Creatures' after a film company executive dismissed the actor as "ugly, black and unbankable."
Despite having "the hottest ensemble cast in town," including Guy Pearce, Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Jennifer Hudson, Woods said the company who owned the script wouldn't accept Whitaker as a leading man. 'The initial finance fell through when I stuck with Forest Whitaker for the role of Charlie,' Woods said.
"An executive told me straight: `Even if he wins the Oscar he's ugly, he's black and he's unbankable.'"

Speaking at the Australian Directors Guild conference in Sydney this weekend, Woods said the company, which he wouldn't name for legal reasons, eventually let go of the script because of their disagreement over Whitaker.
The budget on 'Winged Creature's dropped from $US11 million to $US4.5 million because Woods wouldn't consider a Michael Douglas or an Al Pacino for Whitaker's role. "The unbankable part of it was nearly right," he said.
"They wanted everyone but Forest Whitaker ... and this is one of the best actors on the planet." By the time we had stacked the cast around Forest the asking price for the movie had more than halved from its initial level."
'Winged Creatures' centers around a random shooting in a Los Angeles diner, and how it affects the lives of those who witness it.
I don't know about anyone else, but to say that Whitaker isn't bankable truly hasn't seen his body of work and what he brings to the table. There are plenty of actors, especially Oscar winners who still can't open a film let alone bring in an audience. 'Winged Creatures' was the first film that Whitaker and Hudson did after winning Oscars in 2007, and it still doesn't have a release date.

Ugly, Unbankable, what a twit the idiot who made that statement. Mr Whittaker in my opinion is one of the finest actors I have ever had the pleasure of watching, he has all the attributes of a great human being, his race is irrelevant, he is human before he is black, but I was shocked by the Aussie who made that attrocious remark, but what can you expect from a people who subjucated their own aboriginal people who are the true Australians, the Bitish who were shipped there were the scum of British society and their punishment was indentured servitude in Australia, it's a wonder they made something out of Australia. I always admired them but after that remark I now have doubts.

This is an outrage!!! I thought we as human beings had evolved...Apparently I am wrong. Forest Whittaker is not only a wonderful actor but from what I have read he is a great humanitarian. These people have no taste and are the most ignorant and insufferable I've ever seen. I truely agree with Junebuggs comment
"go on forest with your excellent self! we're just so proud of you - you are an incredible example of black male dignity and pride. a true prince amongst men".

Forest Whitaker is an actor that happens to be black. That does not make him unbankable. He is handsome to somebody out there. He is by far one of the greatest actor out there. I love you Forest and you are handsome to me.

How can a producer be so crass, disrepectful and stupid? Forest Whitaker has earned the respect and the money to be called bankable. If I owned the company, that a-hole would be the first one fired!!
He is truly one of the most gifted actors around, and he just looks like a regular guy. Beautiful!

What an ignorant and sad statement to make in this day and age.(Any day or age for that matter!) I am a human being along with all the rest of humanity, Forest included,& the fact that I am white,(& I am) black, or any race, whether perceived by some to be ugly or pleasant looking, has no bearing on talent, intelligence, or ability to sell at the box office! I often think what if we were all a race of people without the ability to see, wouldn't it be a nicer world, but I am constantly reminded by ignorant close minded statement's like these directed at a wonderfully talented and gifted actor such as Forest Whitaker, people will allways find reasons to be hatefull and stupid! Sad.

Give me a break, when this man acts he becomes more than beautiful...he fills the screen as a power the likes of James Earl Jones. Ignorance, Ignorance, Ignorance, from the elections to the movie business, when/where does it end.....

What an odd thing to say... I enjoy his work so much and, until I read this article, it had not occured to me that he is either black or ugly. I guess I never noticed. I have noticed that I'm always delighted to see that he is in a movie I'm watching and it hasn't evaded me that his parts are memorable long after the storyline has been forgotten. In retrospect, that was a very nasty thing to say and we should just consider the source. Mr. Whitaker, just keep on keepin' on. You're one of the remaining few that I will spend my entertainment dollars on.

Isn't it sad that we live in such a shallow world. What do looks and color have to do with acting?
