Everyone's been talking about how good Mariah Carey is in 'Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire', which took home three awards from this year's 'Sundance Film Festival,' including the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award.
Not only has the film, which is being championed by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, received rave reviews, but 'Variety' described her acting as "pitch-perfect".
Since she had a lead role in the film 'Glitter' in 2001, which was heavily panned by critics, Carey has slowly been building her repertoire with roles in the independent film 'WiseGirls' (2002), and a cameo in Adam Sandler's 2008 film 'You Don't Mess with the Zohan', playing herself.

In 'Push,' she plays a passionate social worker. Also starring in the film are Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, Kimberly Russell and Sherri Shepherd. Newcomer Gabourey Sidibe plays the lead.
Directed by Lee Daniels, the film tells the redemptive story of Precious Jones, a young girl in Harlem struggling to overcome tremendous obstacles and discover her own voice.
Verbally and sexually abused by her family, her troubles lead to problems in school. Precious has no friends, no money, two kids (from her father), and she's illiterate. After being accepted into an alternative school, one of her teachers (Patton) helps her find new direction in life. Along her journey, she comes across a concerned social worker (Carey) and a nurse (Kravitz) who show her incredible kindness.
In March 2009, Carey's film 'Tennessee' arrives in theaters.
Check this scene out from 'Push.' (For Mature Audiences Only)

Wow!!!! That was a nice clip of Mariah's acting and the actress, whos character plays Precious Jones. I bet it is a touching movie. After reading a few negative comments about either one of the ladies I just mentioned...it shows your true soul. What you type and how you come across shows the world your insecurities. It's a shame you who write bad and terrible things about people who you've never met are actually very transparent in your actions and words. Think abut it...if you can! By the way I am not even a fan of Mariah Carey and don't own one CD from her. I am just stating fact(s).

I am surprised to find Ms. Carey/Mrs. Cannon showing a genuine talent in this role. I think she is proving herselfand wish her all the best in what I believe will be an intense and amazing movie. It will lead her further into her a credible and talented acting career.

First people who are making comments on Gabby performance are people with low self esteem themselves. How do you pass by the message of the movie and become a fashion critic. And for the last comment Mariah Carey never said she was spanish or boriqua as you said. She black and white...CLOWN!!!!

i read the book PUSH a while ago, and the book (which, by the way, was written by a kickass dyke-identified Black woman poet/performer from NY)was first and foremost about Precious Jones, not any of the whites who even while helping Precious, clearly comprised cogs in the giant racist, classist machine that oppressed Precious, her mother, her father and her whole neighborhood. the book has very little to do with the social worker and everything to do with the mental process precious must go through to save herself and her baby, and to forgive the things that have been done to her by her relatives and by the callous disregard of the wider culture. PUSH is a political book as well as an uplifting story...I have not seen the movie, and i want to believe, but i find it hard to believe that the movie could possibly honor the self-realization that the book portrays. i think this because it is headed by a household name (Carey), and because it is a hollywood movie, however downplayed and framed as "independent". I hope i'm wrong, but even if i am, everyone owes it to themselves to read the book, ESPECIALLY african-descended people.
