Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.Am Talks 'Wolverine'

We've seen rapper Taboo in 'Street Fighter' and later this year, pop singer Fergie will be starring with Academy Award winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren in 'Nine.' Get ready to see another member of the talented Black Eyed Peas ready to showcase his acting skills.

Making his big-screen debut this week in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' is front man Will.i.Am. Playing the role of John Wraith, the Los Angeles native is paired with Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds and Dominic Monaghan. Last year, Will.i.Am voiced the character of Moto Moto in the animated film 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,' opposite Jada Pinkett Smith and Ben Stiller.

In 'Origins,' Wolverine seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who later becomes Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend and, ultimately, finds himself in the mutant Weapon X program.

Will.i.Am spoke to Black Voices about his role, filming in Australia and his upcoming album with the Black Eyed Peas.

Did you do anything to get into character?

Will.i.Am: Yeah. I put on that outfit. I didn't have to get all machismo like other dudes. Although it would have been fun to do that, it wouldn't have been effective. For me, it was more research and bringing in the right emotion to show that bond. What's cool about my character is that he can be best friends with the baddest of the baddest. He's humble, but he's not the sort of dude you want to mess with. He's approachable and likable.

How was it working with Hugh Jackson, director Gavin Hood and the rest of the cast?

Will.i.Am: I thought Gavin Hood was amazing. I am a huge fan of Liev (Schreiber). I am a fan of the movie he directed ('Everything Is Illuminated'), and the films that he's done. I'm a fan of Hugh, and I'm really a big fan of Dominic Monaghan. I'm one of the biggest 'Lost' junkies you can find. Shooting this film has given me one of the best memories of my life.

How was shooting in Australia?

Will.i.Am: When you are touring, you are trying to do the most you can in the limited amount of days you have. You end up going to place after place but never have the time to really know it and appreciate it. You try to learn as much in two days or less. Now, when you are filming a movie and you have 18 hours before your scene, that's a lot or time to do things. It was a big learning experience in seeing how a movie operates and how time moves.

With this role and the animated work you did for 'Madagascar 2,' are you ready to do more films now or in between your music career?

Will.i.Am: I want to focus on the next Black Eyed Peas record coming out on June, tour it and write my movie -- and eventually direct it.

What movie are you writing?

Will.i.Am: There are a couple of things that I want to do, but I also have to figure out what I want to do first. There's an old French sci-fi cartoon that I want to turn into a film. I won't go into it further because I don't want anyone stealing my idea.

Have you been approach to do another film?

Will.i.Am: Not as of yet, but I hope so after this film is released. I think I want to approach movies the way I entered music, and that is through thinking and dreaming of things. With the Black Eyed Peas, I entered music really because of my imagination, and I let that grow into something wonderful.

What makes the new album different?

Will.i.Am: With the new album, there's evolution. We've changed the sound up a bit. It's still classic Peas, but with a whole new perspective. There's also music that we were inspired by, such as electro and indie rock dance music. We dove into it, and Boom Boom Pow is doing really good.

What was your reaction when you heard that a work print of 'Wolverine' had been released on the Web?

Will.i.Am: My first thoughts were that authorities need to move really fast to bring resolution to this madness. In my industry, piracy has crippled and destroyed it. It was a billion-dollar business at one point in time. That's not the case anymore. There are no more record stores. Four years ago, we had tons of Virgin Mega Stores and Sam Goody stores. Those stores are gone now. Think of all the jobs, from interns to product managers, engineers, studio managers and many more, that are gone because of the piracy in the music industry. Now, it's affecting the movie business, and the next one to be leaked will probably be something bigger. Our arts that the world loves and celebrates and enjoys are part of the American culture. We need to preserve the art and allow it to strive and continue to be a business. Certain countries are known for their exports, like Columbia is known for their coffee beans. I'm pretty sure their government goes a long way to protect that image. We're known for our arts, so someone needs to protect what we deliver to the rest of the world.

Why should anyone see 'Wolverine?'

Will.i.Am: A good reason to see the film is that it's the best film of 2009. It's packed with a lot of action. It's emotional because you get to see why this guy became who he is. You get a back story and see all the people who walked in and out of his life. It's not only about action in the film. There is substance that draws you in. It's fantastic.
