Nearly three years after the legendary 'Soul Train' stopped production, Warner Bros. has hired Malcolm Spellman to write a feature based on the classic TV show.
According to Variety, Darryl Porter and Aaron Geller of Porter/Geller Productions will produce the movie with Don Cornelius, the host and producer of the famed show, which ran from 1971-2006.
"All of the hip-hop street dances you see today were born during that time period and were first seen on that show. I remember doing all of them when I was a kid," said Spellman, whose credits include 'Dead Presidents.'
The movie's protagonist comes from the 'hood in Los Angeles, and his ticket out is his gift for popping, a popular street dance. Cornelius told Spellman he had always wanted to mount a tour with bands and dancers, and the writer will make that fictional tour a centerpiece of the film.
With reruns still airing, 'Soul Train' holds the honor of the longest, continuously running, first-run syndicated program on television.
Plenty of music legends performed on the show, from the Jackson 5, James Brown, Al Greene, the SOS Band, Run-DMC and Will Smith.

This is a great idea. Sounds like it would make a great "Thank God It's Friday"-type movie with multiple storylines that all come together in the end.

I also hope this movie shows how we used to have some great bands back in the day and inspires more young black musicians to start real bands with their own identities rather than just become faceless musicians-for-hire for some mediocre cookie-cutter singer.
See that keyboardist in the S.O.S. Band. He had to physically play that part back then like a real musician rather than today how it's all sequencers, samplers and DAT machine tapes.
