DJ Spinna on Celebrating MJ Birthday With Spike Lee

While Spike Lee coordinated a remarkable event this past Saturday at Brooklyn's Prospect Park, celebrating what would have been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday couldn't have happened without DJ Spinna, the man behind the wheel who kept folks singing and dancing for more than fours hours.

Despite the forecast for heavy rain, only a little drizzle came down, and that didn't stop the music from playing.

Playing the hits of the late pop star, Spinna (aka Vincent Williams) likely scored his biggest exposure to date. He's long been known around the music industry as a talented DJ who spins at A-list events. And spinning at the park was no different.

Some of the celebrities in attendance included Tracy Morgan, Rosie Perez, Free (former host of BET's '106 & Park'), Jeffrey Wright and his wife, actress Carmen Ejogo, Ed Lover, and Rev. Al Sharpton.

After playing an admirable tribute to Michael Jackson, Spinna spoke to Black Voices about the pop star and about working with Spike Lee.

Such a large crowd came out to pay tribute. How did it look from on stage?

Spinna: Man, I was on a high the whole time I was out here. It was very monumental. This is history in the making. I can't the believe the magnitude of this event. I don't even know the numbers, but it had to be at least 20,000 people out here.

Is this the biggest event you've ever done?

Spinna: I would say yes. Number-wise, exposure-wise and the significance of it. It's Michael Jackson's birthday. It doesn't get bigger than this.

Did Spike Lee give you directions on what he wanted you to play?

Spinna: Absolutely. We met a few times, and we went over the hit songs. I've been doing tribute parties for a long time, almost 10 years. I usually do a Michael Jackson-Prince party. After Michael died, I did two straight-up Michael Jackson tributes, only his songs. It was a challenge for me today because it's outdoors and not a club setting, and I always feed off people's energy. Throughout the time that I was playing, at various moments, Spike kept requesting songs that I had already played. "Put on Billie Jean!" The whole thing was to keep energy of the crowd up. Michael's catalog is huge, but the number of songs that are party hits, they are defined and always work. You need the right songs to play when people are making speeches and presentations so the vibe stays the same.

If you had to play one Michael Jackson song over and over, what would it be?

Spinna: 'I Can't Help It.' It's a beautiful song, but also Stevie Wonder is involved with it. He wrote it, and is playing on it. It's my favorite song from the 'Off the Wall' album.

How do you top this? What's next?

DJ Spinna: This event will get only get better. If it becomes an annual thing, who knows. More celebrities may turn up. The awareness of it globally will get more media coverage. I'm glad it started this way. Some guy were out here at five in the morning. It was incredible. This was the definitive Michael Jackson tribute.
