Get the shoes shined, and dress and suits pressed! Here's comes the first of many dances for the little film that has won America's hearts.
Nominations for the 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced this morning and among the films receiving multiple nods were Lee Daniels' critically acclaimed film, 'Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire.'
The Tyler Perry-Oprah Winfrey executive produced film, along with 'The Last Station,' landed the most noms with five, including one for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
All eligible feature films must be 70 minutes in length and the entire cost of a completed project must be under $20 million. A film also must have either screened at a major film festival including Sundance, Toronto or Film Independent's own Los Angeles Film Festival or have had a one-week engagement at a commercial theater.
'Precious' won won three awards at this year's Sundance Film Festival, including the Grand Jury prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. It also won the top award at the Toronto International Film Festival, thus making it the first film to win both awards in the same year.
This is great for a film that was produced for less than $10 million and was slated for a DVD release were it not for Lionsgate picking up the film for theatrical distribution.
'Precious' has brought in over $30 million from less than 700 theaters thus far.
According to the LA Times, the awards ceremony traditionally takes place the Saturday afternoon before the Academy Awards in a massive tent on the beach in Santa Monica. But because the Spirit Awards is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010, the awards are moving to Friday evening (March 5) in a tent on the event deck at L.A. Live downtown. The awards will air live and uncut on the cable channel IFC.
