James Cameron's 'Avatar' was the big winner at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards taking home prizes for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director.
The film has been atop the box office for five straight weeks, and is the second-highest-grossing film ever with $1.61 billion dollars worldwide. 'Avatar' should overtake the top spot of Cameron's previous blockbuster, 'Titanic,' which grossed $1.84 billion.
In her role as the mom-from-hell in 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire,' actress and talk show host MoNique was a double winner this past weekend as she won a Best Supporting Actress award from The Critic Choice Movie Awards, then followed it with another one from Hollywood Foreign Press Association at the Globes.
The Golden Globes are considered a major pre-cursor to the Academy Awards.
In her acceptance, MoNique said: "Everybody kept asking me do I know my speech, and I said, 'No, I don't know what I'm going to say because I don't want people to think I just know I done won something,' so no, I don't know! When I tell you all I am in the midst of my dream and when I look into the eyes of the man I stood next to at 14 years old and I said to him, 'One day we're going to be stars, and he said, 'You first.'" Mo'Nique said. "And we walked this red carpet together tonight. Sidney, I will love you more than you will ever know, baby. I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys -- I celebrate this award with every person that's ever been touched. It's now time to tell. And it's okay."

You know the movie is based on a book right? We know all black women dont fit that desciption. Who care what people think of black women? Long as we know who we are nothing else matters

Congratulations to Monique, but she gets a low grade for her acceptance speech. I know that her primary audience is black and that the language she uses is o.k. for that audience. But for the mainstream audience she needs to get rid of the ghetto language. I was embarrassed by the poor English. To help prepare her for the Oscars someone needs to take her aside and help her prepare a dignified speech without the ebonics. And would someone please tell her to wear a dress with sleeves. She has lost weight and that's good but she's still too big for the strapless dress. I think she's actually a beautiful woman but she needs a better stylist.

It's truly sad to read some of the comments on this site. Monique may not speak the Queen's English and may not be the most stylishly dressed individual at these awards shows, but her work certainly speaks for itself. The subject matter in "Precious" isn't easy fare, even for the most stout-hearted, however, it's life and these things happen far more often than we, the public, are made aware of. That Lee Daniels chose this subject was a brave thing to do - that Monique, being a victim of abuse herself, chose to take this on is truly amazing. I can't say I would be that brave. I don't understand the harsh criticism, but I also know it's very easy to be a critic because critics just sit on the sidelines and spout opinions, but never have to dig very much below the surface for those opinions. We all know what opinions are like - everyone's got one. We may not all agree about Monique's role in the movie nor her acceptance speech, but can we at least agree that there is room at the table for everyone. Year after year, we see the same old faces receiving awards for work not nearly this relevant. It's refreshing to see some new faces at the table, and one never seen before. People need to stop being so harsh and just recognize people for their achievements. It takes far more energy to put someone down than to build them up. We've got enough detractors that we don't need to expend much more energy there. I may not agree with some of things Monique says and does, however I applaud her for this achievement and wish her well in the future.

With "Biggie's" comment, I rest my case. I guess IGNORANCE truly is bliss in some cases.
