Coming out this week is 'The Wolfman,' a 2010 remake of the 1941 horror. The film is directed by Joe Johnston and stars Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Art Malik.
Inspired by the classic film that launched a legacy of horror, 'The Wolfman' brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother only to discover a horrifying destiny for himself.
Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Weaving) has come to investigate.
As he pieces together the gory puzzle, Talbot hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself -- one he never imagined existed.
Out on DVD is 'Endgame,' which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, William Hurt, Jonny Lee Miller and Mark Strong.
'Endgame,' which is based on the true story of secret talks that brought down apartheid in South Africa, is a political thriller. It's a story of hope and of two men taught to hate each other who learn to trust each other to save the country they love.
Set in South Africa in 1985, the country is under siege. Sanctions are biting, Mandela's imprisonment is an international cause celebre, and the ANC guerrilla terrorist attacks are escalating. Every day the country is more ungovernable as it plunges toward the apocalypse of a race war. Everyone knows the vile apartheid regime is doomed, but will the transition to democracy be peaceful or bloody? Working for P.W. Botha as a Machiavellian head of intelligence, Dr. Neil Barnard opens furtive talks arranged by a British businessman with the imprisoned Mandela. The stakes are immense, the secrecy total.
In a stunning indictment of sweeping policy changes during the Bush years, best-selling author Naomi Wolf ('The Beauty Myth') makes a chilling case in 'The End of America' that American democracy is under threat. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in once-free societies, Wolf uncovers a number of deeply unsettling similarities -- from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. With this galvanizing call to arms based on her recent book, she urges regular citizens to take back our legacy of freedom and justice.
