'Why Did I Get Married Too?' Film Review: Cliched But Janet Is A Showstopper

With Hollywood concentrating so much on making films into 3D or doing remakes, leave it for Tyler Perry to bring something original to the table.

In 'Why Did I Get Married Too?,' the sequel to his 2007 blockbuster film, the whole cast (Perry, Sharon Leal, Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael J. White) is reunited again in an emotional and dramatic film that will leave you satisfied when you leave the theater.

Three years have passed since we saw last the couples, and this time, they have decided to get away together and meet up in the Bahamas for a vacation. Terry (played by Perry) and Dianne (played by Leal) seemed to have patched up their differences from when they argued about her not spending enough time at home with him and their daughter. They now have a son. At the airport, they catch up with Angela (played by Smith) and Marcus (played by White), who can never stop bickering in public. Angela is having problems trusting Marcus, as he no longer works for her at the beauty salon. He is now a financially successful sportscaster of a ESPN-like show.

Arriving first on the island of Eleuthera are married couple Sheila (played by Scott) and Troy (played by Rucker), who have moved from Denver to Atlanta with their newborn son. They could use the vacation as a temporary escape from the problems they face back home. Troy can't deal with being unemployed. "Perfect couple" Gavin (played by Yoba) and his therapist/ author wife Patricia (played by Jackson) try to keep everyone at bay while not discussing their own issues.

As the guys and gals each get together to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their marriages, with Angela stressing over not having Marcus' password to his cell phone, all are upset over the arrival of Mike (played by Jones), Sheila's ex-husband. Seems everyone forgot that Mike's a participant in their timeshare property and has every right to enjoy himself, much to the chagrin of Troy.

When the time comes to talk openly about what makes their marriage work, Patricia drops a bombshell that sets a course of action that will challenge the commitment of marriage for all couples.

What works with Perry's films is his ability to entertain. With no Madea on board, leave it to Tasha Smith to bring on the comedy. Much like the first film, this actress (and sought after acting coach) has the funny bones to make tears come out of your eyes, but in this film, her comedic timing is a little too much and too forced. Your eyes have dried up by the time we get midway through the film.

Perry has been quoted in saying that he wrote the sequel because he wanted to see the characters grow and mature, but judging by the challenges that each of the couples are facing, if you had seen the original, then you're wondering if he's stuck in time. With the exception of Sheila and Troy's dilemma, the other subplots are clichéd.

While Perry gives himself and Leal the weakest storyline of the couples, Jackson and Yoba are provided with the soap opera melodramatic weight of the film. In her biggest acting role since 'Poetic Justice,' Jackson gives her best credible and emotional scenes in this film. Her emotional breakdown is a showstopper.

In the end, 'Married Too?' isn't the perfect film about the challenges of being married, but Perry brings enough issues to the table to enlighten and entertain the audience and have them invested with the characters.
