While reporting on the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, CNN reporter Brooke Anderson spoke to Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson on the recent controversy surrounding her impending portrayal of Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of former South Africa president Nelson Mandela, in the biopic 'Winnie.'
Hudson was there to promote the film along with Terrence Howard, who will play Mandela in the film.
Winnie Mandela had threaten to sue the filmmakers because she had not been asked to consult on the film and because and American is playing her.
Principal photography for 'Winnie' begins May 31 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei and Robben Island.

What do you expect from Follywood?
I can understand why Actors and Actresses do not take a stand. They have to eat and pay their bills.
It is time for Black Folks to understand that we have more power than we currently recognize, if only we would just use it.

@ooozzzzz @Attorneymom - Please do not place Winnie on the same pedestal as Nelson Mandela. Madiba is a great and compassionate man, and Winnie is a calculating and conniving political figure. She is shrouded in controversy and has little to no compassion for her people. She surrounds herself with political cronies and characters of ill repute.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu himself has begged Winnie in open forums to come clean about her role in the Stompie Sepei murder (amongst other things) and she has refused to be held accountable for her actions. Her relationship with Nelson is estranged at best and many South Africans beleive he has distanced himself from her owing to both her chequered past (and present for that matter).
The real reasons she wants editorial control over this movie are 1.) that she is afraid her true character will be revealed to the world and 2.) she wants her piece of the pie. She is simply a money grabber passing herself off as a socialist in order to remain among the political elite.
I am an educated South African and I have lived through many of the atrocities the world now thinks they understand. Winnie Mandela claims to be a freedom fighter but in truth she is an evil woman with her own agenda.
Don't fall into the trap of sympathizing with her.

@Theko - Thank you for your comments Theko - A few years back I ran into a good friend who is also from South Africa whom I worked with at one time. We began talking about Mandela
and then, of course Winnie and he said many of the exact same things you are saying how "shady" she is in real life and how she has "used" Nelsons name and image to "get-over" in the public eye.
The most telling thing about Winnie is how when Nelson got out of prison he quickly DIVORCED Her!
IMO, That said a great deal about what he thought of her as a person.

@ Theyo....You can say anything you want to about Winnie, but she was the one that fought against apatheid with the rest of you scare ass black South Africans while Mandela was in jail. There were/are over 22million blacks who allowed 2 million whites to come into your country and rule all of you nuggers. Winnie was one woman, yet she fought. Unless you were a part of the solution, you need to put a sock it.
As for Nelson, regardless of who Winnie may have slept with while his ass was locked down for 25 years, she still stuck by him. I don't see anything he did for the country after he came back besides making sure that they had a good soccer team. To be honest with you I don't see why any of them should be honored.
Black Americans fought for civil and equal rights against 88% of the country, Yes we died and was strung up, beat down, jailed, murdered, anything else negative that you can think of, but we fought. You people allow a handful of whites to rule your country, yet you can sit here and complain about Winnie? Nelson doesn't get my praise for spending 25 years in prison. He spend the time because the white man said that he did the crime. Why should I applaud him for that. If it was not for the aide and assistant of the black Americans and people from around the world fighting against apartheid, all of yall black asses would still be kissing the white man's ass.
No one helped the slave descendents of this country fight for freedom, yet we did it. Our fight has allowed people like you to be here today
So Mr. educated one, if Winnie don't want to talk, she doesn't have to, seeing that the white man is going to make the movie anyway. Nelson I'm sure will probably have no issues with the film, as it is sure to make him look like an angel

Theko Loyiso....Why shouldn't Winnie want a piece of the piece? Afterall, the movie is about her and her ex-husband. She has every right to want to be paid. As for who play her part, that's not her call to make.

But for Jennef to play winnie is a big NO!!!!NO!!!!
for me and i wont watch the movie!,there are many talented south african men and women who can play these two roles!
Its stupid for african to let american make huge profits on them and in their own land!
Dnt get me wrong Jennifer and Terence are great on the movies but to play these roles it a big NOOOO!!!!, they can sign Micheal Jackson's song and act in Best man that's as far as it goes not in africa.

@ Babs...Excuse me miss babs, but there are Africans in this country who play the role of black Americans all the time. Do you have a problem with that? Hell if it wasn't for black Americans here in America, the Africans would not have a role to play. So shut your ugly face because you don't have one cent in that nickle
