In an interview with U.K.'s Digital Spy, director Antoine Fuqua mentioned that his next film will be a biopic on slain rap legend Tupac Shakur.
Morgan Creek Productions will produce the film, with shooting to start in September.
No actor has been tapped to play Tupac yet as Fuqua stated in the interview, "That's the goal. I want to discover someone new. ... I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I'm going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world."
Fuqua's last film, 'Brooklyn's Finest,' starred Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Wesley Snipes, but it didn't do so well at the box office, only grossing $31.3 million worldwide.
Born on June 16, 1971, Tupac Amaru Shakur was the son of a former Black panther. His conflicts with other rappers helped spark the East Coast–West Coast hip-hop rivalry. The Harlem native died of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at the age of 25 in 1996 after falling victim to a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. With more than 75 million albums sold worldwide, he's one of the best-selling music artists to date.
As an actor, Tupac appeared in notable films such as 'Juice,' 'Poetic Justice' and 'Above the Rim.' In 2009's 'Notorious,' the biopic on Christopher "Notorious B.I.G" Wallace, actor Anthony Mackie played the role of Tupac.
