Black Voices caught up to actor Idris Elba for an exclusive interview during the 14th Annual American Black Film Festival, which is taking place in South Beach, Miami this weekend.
The British thespian has morphed into one of Black Hollywood's most sought after leading men. And for the anticipated movie festival on the beach, the former scene stealer of HBO's 'The Wire' has taken on the role of being "Ambassador" of this year's festivities.
Mr. Elba talked candidly about his new movie projects ('Takers,' 'Legacy' and 'Thor'), his new television work ('The Big C'), being considered a sex symbol, his budding music career and his views on interracial relationships in America.

I want to address the interracial dating comment. It isn't and shouldn't be an issue when someone dates outside of their race, I don't have an issue with that as a matter of fact. My issue is that entertainment industry portrays Black men predominantly as dating/marrying outside of their race. When do we see white men or white women in the same relationships with a person of color - we RARELY do! In movies and in music videos the Black woman as a mate to the black man seems to be extinct! Apparently we as black women are deemed to be less than desirable partners for our own men. In addition, I noticed that the black man can be darked skinned, but God forbid a dark skinned black woman is portrayed as intelligent, capable, beautiful, sexy and desirable! In the entertainment industry as a whole (real life), a black woman will usually choose a black man as her partner, but the black man appears to only choose a black woman if she comes complete with "credentials", otherwise, his choice seems to always be a non-black woman. The industry which remains predominantly white run continues to exercise racist practices where black people are concerned, and the black people who might be in the position to change those views seemed to have sold out in reverence of the almighty dollar! Back in the day they would have been referred to as "Uncle Toms". I am conerned with the phycological impact this practice is having on the dark skinned woman who have to battle against sterotypes as it is, this type of incidious practice makes it even harder. Black people STOP perpetuating self hate & self racism, be concious of your words & actions!

Didn't know it was like that for light skinned brothers. I'm a dark woman and I just figured it was that way on this side. Most guys that I know prefer light women. I myself think chocolate is truly irresistable, but to each his own. Yes, Idris is extremely handsome and chocolate!
