Recapping Day 3 Of The American Black Film Festival

After starting Day 1 of the 14th American Black Film Festival with the premiere and opening of 'Takers,' and followed with a screening of 'Legacy' which starred ABFF 2010 Ambassador Idris Elba on Day 2, Day 3 was packed with lots of excited and star wattage.

The day kicked off with breakfast at the exclusive Club Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in South Beach, Miami. It has a great view to the beach and the Atlantic Ocean, and where one can get up to five complimentary food and drinks presentation throughout the day. When it's over 90 degrees outside and you're not up catching heat so early in the morning, it's a great comfort to stay indoors before getting tanned up with the sun.

Once breakfast was over, it was time to soak in the sun and getting some swimming exercise by the pool and at the beach. It's cool to have a concierge walk with you as he puts a towel by the chair and ready to serve you a drink of water or beverage if you need one. After a couple of hours of just relaxing and not thinking about typing or taking photos, duty called as I was set to see three films today, including the premiere of 'Stomp The Yard: Homecoming.'

With all films playing at the Colony Theater, the first film of the day was the horror film, 'The Inheritance,' which stars Golden Brooks, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Rochelle Aytes, Lanre Idewu, Shawn Michael Howard, D.B Woodside, and Keith David.

With Robert O'Hara making his directorial debut and the film being produced by Effie T. Brown and her production company, Duly Noted Inc., the story centers on family friends who gather during a winter storm for a 'secret' reunion at the family estate. The connection to their tortured history is one of only passing fascination. The reunion turns deadly when the elders have to make good on an ancient pact with a spirit of an ancestor. Now, it's this generation's turn to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is their duty and their destiny, but they won't give up without a fight to survive.

As the film ended, the producers and cast got on stage to talk about making the film and taking questions from the audience. With a lack of black horror films out there, it's more likely that the film will be played at the festivals before landing theatrical distribution.

The theater is about a seven minute walk to the hotel, so I was able to come back, recharge my cell phone, and head back to catch the second screening of the day, 'The Confidant.'

Written and directed by Alton Glass, the film is produced and stars former Miss USA Kenya Moore. Also starring Boris Kodjoe, rapper David Banner, Bai Ling, and Richard Roundtree, the film is an complex tale about childhood best-friends that have an unusually strong bond and a more intriguing secret. David Banner, and both Glass and Moore came on stage after the screening ended to talk about they shot the film in 13 days. With that short amount of timeframe, kudos goes to the editor for pulling it together. Codeblack Entertainment will be releasing the film on DVD on August 24.

With less time to spare, I met my colleagues as we were setting up to cover the red carpet premiere of 'Stomp The Yard: Homecoming,' the sequel to the hit film that starred Columbus Short and Meagan Good.

It was still over 90 degrees at 8:30pm and the line to get inside was crazy. Although tickets to the screening were sold out weeks ago, someone forgot to post that news on the web or outside and there were nearly 1500 people that were turned away. Luckily, a second screening was held to accommodate some.

With a new cast that includes Collins Pennie, Pooch Hall, Tika Sumpter, Terrance T.P. Polite, Antjuan Tobias, Lamar Stewart, Terrence J, Lil Duval, Kiely Alexis Williams, Keith David, rapper David Banner and music artist Teyena Taylor, the film was directed by Rob Hardy and produced by Will Packer.

The audience seemed to love the film judging by the reaction I saw as people were exiting the theater. Sony Home Entertainment is releasing the film on DVD and Blu-ray in September.

The evening ended for me after I left the afterparty at Gemma Lounge, where the cast showed up as well as other celebrities.
