Comic Con Preview: Terry Crews Talks 'Expendables' and Possible Sequels

San Diego Comic Con is a just few weeks away (July 21-25), and actor Terry Crews will be in attendance to promote his latest film, the highly anticipated action film 'The Expendables.'

Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, the film also stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Giselle Itie, Eric Roberts, David Zayas and Steve Austin.

Also in the film are Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The film is a hard-hitting action-thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren't quite as they appear. They find themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as "removing those hard-to-get-at stains."

The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Statham), a former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Crews), who has known Barney for 10 years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, he and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena, and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul -- his own.

Stallone, Lundgren, Austin, Couture and Crews will be at a Comic Com promoting the upcoming film on July 22.

The film opens on Aug. 13.

Black Voices caught up with Crews recently as he spoke about his role and working with Stallone.

What's your role in the film?

Terry Crews: I play a guy named Hale Caesar. I'm the weapons specialist. I'm the only guy who has actual guns out in the movie. He literally wrote the part for me. Sly wrote and directed the film, and it was crazy watching the master work. He's really very funny. He wanted me to bring in some comedy into the film and that's my thing, too. I love comedy.

Have you seen the film?

Terry Crews: I've seen some of it.

Is it going to be as big as people are predicting?

TC: I'm biased, but I just think that you better work out before you get there.

With such a big cast, do you have a big or small role in the film?

TC: It's big. Stallone took me under his wing and I'm right there. I'm the black guy. What can I say? I'm the magical Negro. (laughs) I'm happy. I get to follow in the steps of the Wesley Snipes in the world. It's a very small group. Brothers in action films are rare. I get to blow a whole lot of stuff up. Stallone literally handpicked me and said, "I'm going to show you the ropes and show you what this is about." We were in Brazil and New Orleans and other places. I'll never forget it. When you talk about the holy trinity of action films and that's Arnold [Schwarzenegger], Bruce [Willis] and Sly [Stallone], and it doesn't get any bigger than that.

If it does well at the box office, will there be a sequel?

TC: Oh yeah. He said that they plan on making a bunch of them, and I said, "I'm in." I said they should it 'The Renegoitables.'

Does Stallone have it planned out?

TC: You have to fly with him. If he wants to do 12 films, I'm good -- as long as my knees can handle it.

If you are talking about sequels, then we can assume that you won't die in the film. If so, who from the big cast doesn't make it?

TC: I can't say. All I know is that I'm alive. I can't get into everyone's characters.

Do you see yourself as an action hero lead character?

TC: I do. I eventually see it coming, and I'm preparing every step of the way, but more so for action-comedy. I like my twist. They don't even have a white guy that does what I do, which is sort of good. Everyone has a parallel like Denzel [Washington] and [George] Clooney, but with Terry Crews, I don't know.

What about your co-star in the film, Randy Couture?

TC: He ain't me. I love Randy and he's great, but he ain't me. Tell him to do 'White Chicks' or four seasons of 'Everybody Hates Chris." He will whip my ass in the ring, though.
