BlackVoices recently learned of the death of actress and singer Dana Dawson, who died of colon cancer at the age of 36.
Dawson was a theater actress who worked as an understudy on the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical 'Rent.' She would later join the Broadway cast in 2001 as an understudy/swing.
Singing since the age of 7, Dawson had her first single at the age of 14. With her second album released in 1995, three of her singles -- '3 is Family,' 'Got to Give Me Love' and 'Show Me' -- made the U.K. top 40 chart.
Dawson's songs are included on many other albums, including EMI's 'Music of the Twentieth Century: 1980–1999' and Virgin's 'Best Dance Album 1995.' She also performed on the Michael W. Smith 1989 Gospel album 'I 2 Eye.'
The New York native also appeared in the 1988 film 'Starlight: A Musical Movie.' Dawson's birthday was on Aug. 7. She passed away on Aug. 10.

Legacy? Michael Jackson is a legacy. James Brown is a legacy. She is not even close. Talented, maybe. Legacy...not.

I agree with you, Al.
And to you, Robert: Do us all a favor and go chase yourself along a white line on a thruway, please.
Why are SO MANY forgettable little nobodies like you frustrated and angry to the point of being contrary, bitchy nuisances on public boards reporting tragedies like the death of this beautiful, talented young woman? Have you NO shame, AT ALL??? Being a great, caring listener can be someone's legacy, helping or donating to the poor can be a legacy, as well as working on a board of trustees, raising children, making a difference in someone's life, etc. What kind of a miserable so-and-so must you be to attempt to deny this exceptionally gifted, celebrated woman's legacy when her recent death has shocked and saddened throngs across the country??? Is YOUR legacy to be that of one who was a nasty, negative nobody who went out of his way to make life just a bit less pleasant for those around him??? If so, you seem to be doing a great job, so far....

Even a moron like you can leave a "legacy"! I think the word you were looking for is LEGEND! Dumb ass! R.I.P Ms. Dawson.

Looked her and Rosario Dawson up online. No relation. Apparently this video was from 1996. So sad to think such a vibrant, lovely, talented young woman was struck down by cancer. Such a loss.

It's a shame when true talent is taken so soon but untalented people get reality shows that air 24 hours a day.

Where would we be without Black entertainers of ALL art forms. I am white and know how much they enrich our lives, throught the centuries.
Terrific, charming song and video. I did not know of her....we never know when Yeshua, Jesus will call us home. Shalom to all.
