Lionsgate announced that it will release Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls' on Nov. 5 instead of its original launch date during Martin Luther King weekend in 2011.
The move, which would put the film in a good position to snag year-end awards consideration, also continues Perry's streak of releasing at least one film per year since 2005.
"It's a serious film that really lends itself to the fall period. From talking with exhibitors, I know they're really excited to have another Tyler Perry film this year," said David Spitz, Lionsgate's executive vice president and general sales manager.
'For Colored Girls' is based on Ntozake Shange's award-winning 1975 play of the same name. The story consists of a series of poems performed through a cast of nameless women known only by a color. The characters deal with subjects such as love, abandonment, rape and abortion.

The cast includes Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Tessa Thompson, Michael Ealy, Hill Harper, Khalil Kain, Omari Hardwick and Richard Lawson.
Competing against the film on Nov. 5 will be the Paramount-DreamWorks Animation 3-D toon 'Megamind,' starring Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt, and Warner Bros.' Todd Phillips-directed 'Due Date,' with Robert Downey, Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan and Jamie Foxx.

Bill, I feel sorry for you. It's because of people like you and your mentality that we as a people have a hard time moving forward, but don't get it twisted, we are moving forward and that's what you and people like you can't deal with. When I say people like you, I'm talking about people with small minds. Grow up!

This release coincides with the return of the original play on November 11 to the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Los Angeles, where it broke attendance records (the theatre was called the Huntington Hartford then). People should see the play before the film - or at least compare it! Information about the play, starring Grammy Winner Shanice Wilson and Emmy Nominee Regina Williams, can be seen at visartsociety.org/fcg
