Although early numbers on Friday suggested that Denzel Washington's latest train film, 'Unstoppable,' was on its way to winning the top spot at the box office this weekend, it lost steam and came in second behind the 3-D animated film 'Megamind.'
With a $30.1 million take, 'Megamind' held on to the number one position for a second consecutive week and to date has grossed $89 million. Playing in nearly 4,000 theaters and with 3-D ticket prices, it was hardly given any competition.
Playing in 3,207 theaters, 'Unstoppable' brought in $23.5 million, making this the eighth film in which Washington has starred that has debut at over $20 million (the streak extends to 12 when adjusting for ticket price inflation), says boxofficemojo.com.
Coming in third place was the Robert Downey Jr. comedy 'Due Date,' with $15.5 million and total cume of $59 million in 10 days. Landing in fourth place was Donald Faison's alien film 'Skyline,' which opened with $11.1 million from 3,100 screens at 2,880 locations.
Rounding out the top five was the Harrison Ford-Diane Keaton film 'Morning Glory,' which took in $9.6 million. Since it opened on a Wednesday, the film mustered a weak $12.2 million over five days.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls,' which opened in second place last week, lost 65 percent of its audience this past weekend to bring in an estimated $6.8 million.
Although the heavily dramatic film has received positive feedback from audiences and has a dynamic cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Thandie Newton, Janet Jackson and Kerry Washington, this marks the worst second-weekend drop of any movie Perry has produced or directed. With a $30.9 million haul in 10 days, and considering this is his first R-rate film, 'Colored Girls' should still do well for Perry and his distributor, Lionsgate.

For colored girls has only been released in ltd box offices, so i would say it is doing pretty good regardless of the negativity from some, but that is to be expected. Precious was shown in ltd box offices but still created a buzz, you have to look at it's longelaity, and say to yourself would you go back and watch the movie again? at the end of the day it's word of mouth that sells a movie, the movie has universal appeal it depends if we want to listen to what the movie has to say.

In order for a movie to be considered a box office hit it must gross over a 100 million dollars. It's appears that this movie won't make $75 million which is worst then the original movie some 30 years ago.
The movie will recoup it's expense from distribution rights, sales and rentals.

There is no buzz, and by any standard of measure it bombed. For whatever reason, it is already an after thought.

Actually for a movie to be consider a hit it only has to make 30% over final budget. That's how TP always banks a profit. He knows how to shot very inexpensive projects. Plus he has limited theaters.

the movie for colored girls is too depressing. who wants to see a teenage girl have an abortion, children dropped from a window, a woman getting raped and ect. people were crying during the movie and i know people who actually left in the middle of the movie because it was too sad

Everyone has their opinion, true, and you are entitled to your's. But just to view he movie in another way, Yes, there were sad moments in the movie, but that is life, No one's life if full of happiness one hundred percent of the time, and unfortunate, these things do happen in real life, but the movie also show that regardless of what has occurred in one's life, it definitely may not be easy, but, one can move forward and succeed.
(for color girls.... who CONSIDERED suicide)
This let someone know that suicide is not the answer. We never know, someone may have been consideing suicide, but seeing how the characters in the movie overcame, may have helped them.

I refuse to see any more movies where I'm depressed the first hour and a half...and where they expect me to be encouraged in the last ten minutes by some life altering turn of events. I won't be seeing 'For Colored Girls.'

I agree with you ~ Why is it so hard to accept movies that are played in real for BF? If they make a movie that is funny, they are acting like BF, if it's serious it's to depressing ~ BF need to STOP with some of there negativity, but will watch 90210, Vampire Dairies, Morning Glory, SAW, and many more, and won't complain, but as soon as someone comes along and try to make movies that truly display the realness of what some Black Families deal with? It's to depressing ~ Yet the same type movie can be played with the same senerio and it's a BOX OFFICE HIT, the only difference? Race ~(SMH) ~ I will continue to support those Producer, actors that make movies that protray blacks not in a negative, gang banging type, but what Blacks have been doing for years Hiding behind the real pain, they don't want to face ~ Peace

Maybe TP should do a movie like "Who's your Caddy" or "I Got the Hookup"
Those movies were pretty cheerful
