Film Bridge International has released the trailer to 'Winnie,' starring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela..
Darrell James Roodt is directing the South African-Canadian co-production from a screenplay he wrote with Andre Pieterse based on Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob's book 'Winnie Mandela: A Life.'
Also cast in the film are Elias Koteas as De Vries, an overzealous officer in the apartheid police state who rises to power and becomes intent on stopping Winnie and anti-apartheid activists, and Wendy Crewson, who will play activist Mary Botha.
The story of Winnie – as she is simply known throughout the world – is remarkable.

From the 1960's to the 1980's, Winnie Mandela was widely admired as a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. She suffered harsh reprisals for the beliefs of her husband, Nelson with whom she lived for only five weeks before he was imprisoned for the first time. During the later years of her husband's lifetime prison sentence, Winnie emerged as a leading opponent of the white minority rule government. Unfortunately, her reputation as a leader of the people was damaged by accusations of misconduct and by what many considered her bloodthirsty rhetoric. She was convicted of kidnapping and accessory to assault in connection with the death of a fourteen year old boy. Though her sentence was eventually reduced to a fine, and her tireless struggles on behalf of equality continued, world opinion of her has been very harsh.
This story of 'Winnie' focuses –not so much on the sometimes negative press she received -but on the very powerful love story that kept Winnie and Nelson Mandela together for years.

Winnie was working at Baragwanath Hospital as a social worker when she met the charismatic young lawyer, Nelson Mandela. It was love at first sight. Their passionate courtship was romantic as well as chaotic. Often interrupted by his own ambitious political intentions, Nelson was relentless in his pursuit of Winnie. In the early years of their marriage, she had to learn to survive on her own, as Nelson toured the country urging an anti-apartheid message, while building his legacy and the loyalty of millions. After Nelson's notable arrest and imprisonment in 1962, Winnie also became a political prisoner and was held in solitary confinement for nearly two years.
Very few people know about Winnie Mandela, her personal struggles and her tireless dedication to gain freedom from apartheid. She has been linked to murder and fraud, and portrayed as a serial adulterer. Her image often deliberately undermined by her enemies. What Nelson Mandela did was extraordinary, but there's no doubt South Africa would have been a vastly different place today without Winnie.
There is no release date set as the film is still seeking theater distribution.

I agree!!...I just finished watching the trailer and I'm not convinved at all...they also did a horrible job on their make-up as the aging version of Winnie...both of their accents suck as well...I agree Jeffrey Wright shouldve played role of Mandela...T. Howard's voice is too weak to play role of Mandela...should've been cable or straight to DVD movie for real!!...Yes they're both prominent actors hence the Academy Awards they nomitated and won, but doesnt mean that every role is for them...this movie isnt one of them..We as critics who spend our money to watch movies are entitle to our opinion so I'm sharing mine as well...good day BV!! :)

It is a fact that this woman keept hope alive, and a movement alive. What strength, chrisma, determination, and persistance she must have had, with love and dedication she basically piked up a mantel, a dream, and made it come to fruition. It's about time someone fave her the accolades she deserved. FOR HER CRITICS, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE, AND COULD YOU WITH LITTLE ASSISTANCEAND ONLY YOUR FAITH AND LOVE TO GUIDE YOU. Her faults are sure, but you who is without sin and who gave a helping hand please cast the first stone.
To the actors, backers, producers, and supporters, GOD SPEED, AND IT'S ABOUT TIME.

Well I wouldn't have violated the human rights of my own people like she did. She was a great woman but don't get caught up in jumping on a bandwagon and try to diminish the severity of her crimes. She did unspeakable horrors that her husband would never have condoned.

By: terrance is not a good actor. on 11/16/2010 11:04AM
You all messed up by casting terrence howard as Mandela. Terrence Howard can not act. Jeffery Wright whould have made a better mandela, at least Jeffery is an excellent Actor. terrence howard makes black actors look very bad. And you dummies gave him a acadamy award, what an insult to the real good Black actors.

Not to undermine your passion in disliking Terrance Howard (for some reason you're taking this so personal) but I had to let you know that he never won an Oscar. When you're criticizing someone make sure you have your facts straight next time lol. - I agree with several of the other South Africans who would have preferred African actors in these roles. Not sure J-Hud is right for this - but I could be wrong not having seen it.

I agree. Hudson and Howard are wrong for this. Even from watching the trailers this feels like a cable or tv movie. Neither of them do even half decent african accents. At least Howard kind of has the look of Mandela a little. They should have let homeland actors do it. But to be fair to Hollywood's intentions, they never would have let true african blacks other than Djimon Hounsou or Sophie Okenodo get lead roles in this and even then they'd only choose one of them and give the other role to a Black american actor.
