Dee Rees' debut film, 'Pariah,' which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, has been acquired by Focus Features for theatrical distribution, states Deadline.com.
The film, which stars Adepero Oduye, Pernell Walker, Kim Wayans, Charles Parnell and Aasha Davis, is a coming-of-age story about a 17-year old African American teen from Brooklyn trying to find her place in the world and coming to terms with her identity as a lesbian.
Focus has also engaged Rees to write another script with an eye for her to direct. The deal was in the seven-figure range.
The picture, which started as a short film, was executive produced by indie icon Spike Lee and produced by Nekisa Cooper.
Rees, a graduate from New York University's Tisch School Graduate Film Program, was one of Filmmaker magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2008.
In 2010, Focus acquired 'The Kids Are All Right,' the Lisa Cholodenko-directed feature that premiere at Sundance and starred Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. It became a indie hit, grossing more than $20 million domestically and nearing $30 million worldwide. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including best picture.

You have a lot of these types in Atlanta. All I can say is they look VERY DUSTY. I feel bad that I think this way bc I am usually really open minded, but girls that dress this way just aren't appealing to the eye. Either way I do believe in freedom of choice and if this is truly who they ARE, so be it.

I agree, Cynic...some look very rough, and I don't understand that, but maybe it's not for me to understand. I, too, try to be open minded but physical attraction has to be somewhere in the equation.
Why have a woman who looks like a man? Hell, I could just have a man! LOL
But, to each his own.

Cynic,
What do you mean by "they look VERY DUSTY"? I have never heard that term before. Also, these ladies are not dressing to appeal to you. No more than someone who is tatted up from head to toe or has body piercings every where or chooses to wear spiky, multi-colored hair. They aren't doing it for you because its not about you. Its about what they feel. Its their own personal express.
And Justifyed,
Just because someone dresses like a man doesn't make them a man physically no more than when a man dresses like a woman, it still does not make him a woman. When you take your clothes off, you are still what you came into the world as until you get surgically altered.
This isn't new. People have been cross dressing for generations. If you want to talk about how someone dresses, talk about people who should have taken a long, honest look at themselves before they left the house such as the overweight man who's pants are too tight and his shirt is too short and everytime he bends over just a little you see the crack of his behind. Or the overweight woman who wears halters when her girls are almost dragging the ground or shorts that probably belong to her youngest daughter. I could name a lot of different ways people dress badly. At least with the people who cross dress, most of the ones I've seen seem to take great care in how they dress even if it is clothing of the opposite sex. But again, its not about what I like. Its about their own personal expression. At least they are covering up instead of letting it all hang out.

Please stop this politically correct b.s. I am so sick and tired of it. We don't have to accept any lifestyle. Don't try to act like just because you haven't heard someone described as "dusty" you can't imagine what's implied. They do look dirty and manly. They do this on purpose. I rather see a heterosexual letting it hang out than a homosexual who is conservative.

I have granddaughters that might be impressionable. Gay material to me is vulgar. showing this in movies is giving a wrong ideal. even if a woman isn"t gay she shouldn't dress like a man. What happen to be a lady. It should be brought back

I don't agree with any homosexual lifestyle, which i've expressed quite often on blogs. Most of them have a blatant disregard for other people around, especially children. I don't want mine to see abnormal homosexual activity, nor heterosexual activity. I'm no prude, but children are indeed impressionable and there are things that they should be protected from. It's partly their (Homo or Hetero) attire, attitudes, and vulgarity. It's hard to explain to a child why a woman dresses like a man, or vice versa. Why is a man kissing another man, or woman kissing another woman. I also don't like men with sagging pants (undies showing is gross), and women who wear blouses for dresses (just don't sneeze or position your body in a 10 degree angle).

Instead of talking bad about gay people, maybe folks need to start talking about how all these Black men would rather take care of a dog than their own damn kids.

yo you need stop with all that. I know a lot of men who take care of their children! How about we talk about women who are quick to shack up with any man that comes a long, exposing her children to sexual molestation...? How about the laws that are set against fathers having any say in how their children are being raised? Or how about how men have no control over their reproduction, but the fact that women can have abortions....
shut the fukk up with all that!

what do you mean you "dont agree" with the it? I dont think it is up to you are anyone else to "agree" or "disagree" with their lifestyle... I say let them live...
BUT... I have to say I HATE seeing women acting like they are men. IT makes a mockery of something that I have fought hard against the world to have: my black manhood!
But the bible says "Seek first the Kingdom and all these THINGS will be added unto you"... which means that my "Black manhood" is a THING that God wants me to forsake for His Kingdom...
