With his latest film, 'Madea's Big Happy Family,' set to open in April, director Tyler Perry certainly isn't letting moss grow under his feet. On his next project, however, he'll take direction from someone other than himself (for only the second time in his career).
Variety reports that Perry is set to star as the iconic Alex Cross in a reboot of the role popularized for moviegoers by Oscar winner Morgan Freeman ('Kiss the Girls' and 'Along Came a Spider'). Ironically, the only film that Perry has appeared in that he didn't direct was a reboot of another movie franchise-- J.J Abrams' 'Star Trek,' in which he played Admiral Richard Barnett.
"He (J.J Abrams) was the first. It didn't make sense to do a movie that I can do myself," said Perry shortly after the release of 'Star Trek'. "I don't want you to call me and ask me to do a film about a black family. Now, if you want me to do 'Mission: Impossible', or 'Star Trek' or 'Wolverine', which I was called for but I couldn't do because I was doing 'The Family That Preys', but those sort of films, yes, I can do that."
Perry will star in 'I, Alex Cross,' James Patterson's origin tale of the detective/psychologist. Last August, British actor Idris Elba shared that he was offered the role while speaking at an event in Boston. Looks like talks died down sometime in the last few months.
Cross is described as an African-American detective and psychologist living and working in the Southeast D.C. After his stint with the FBI, Alex returns to private psychology practice, but continues to consult for the MPD and the FBI as needed, ultimately rejoining the MPD as a special consultant to the Major Case Squad.Filming is set to start in June. It'll be interesting to see what Perry brings to the character that Freeman played so convincingly. Luckily Perry isn't a small man, because he'll have some big shoes to fill for fans of the series. Rob Cohen ('xXx: the Return of Xander Cage') will direct the film. No release date has been set.

With all due respect to Tyler Perry, this is a very poor casting decision. Anyone who follows the James Patterson series of books with Alex Cross knows that the persona is very specialized. This is a purely commercial decision to pull the Tyler Perry audience, much like the cameo of him in the last Star Trek movie. And when it gets tepid reception, they will blame Tyler Perry and use it as a reason to dismiss him in the future for projects he should have or take.

I agreed with you 100%. The cross series is my best James Patterson books, I have all of James Patterson books. I fell in love with Alex Cross him books those and, the two movies. No, disrespect to Tyler Perry. But, I do not see him as Alex Cross.

I happen to agree with Ms. E Joyce. I am a avid reader of James Patterson's books, mainly the Alex Cross series and that role should go to someone with some serious acting weight on his belt. Please by no means get it twisted, I love Tyler Perry and all of the movies and plays he has made. I believe he should leave this one alone.

You are right. It should go to an actor with more serious action experience. Morgan Freeman did a excellent job on the two Alex Cross Movies. I do not have anything against Tyler Perry. But, I think this is a mistake.

I agree Tyler Perry is not right for the Alex Cross character. Maybe Laurence Fishbourne, Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson. I think these actors are a better fit for the role.

Tyler Perry definitely not right for this role. This role would have been perfect for Jeffery Wright, Don Cheadle, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne or Samuel Jackson.

Samuel Jackson would be my pick also! Sorry to say that Tyler Perry (in my opinion) is not the one.

Everyone who has commented is right on the mark. I do not see Tyler Perry as this character. After reading the series and I have read them all I think this is a very bad decisiohn. I do not even think Samuel Jackson should get this role. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING. Morgan Freeman was a bad choice and this one is even WORST. Come on Patterson rethink this casting.
